The 10 best wedding venues in Augsburg

Augsburg weddings split between the city and the farmland along the Lech and the Wertach. In town the recurring names are the Parktheater im Kurhaus Göggingen, a glass-and-cast-iron theatre finished in 1886; Depot29, a converted tram depot next door to the Mazda Classic car museum; the Kesselhaus, a factory hall on Riedingerstraße with a 21-metre ceiling; and the Eiskanal Eventlocation, whose terrace sits on the 1972 Olympic canoe slalom course. The legal ceremony happens somewhere else entirely, because Standesamt Augsburg marries couples in only three rooms in the whole city.

Jean Keller built this hall of glass and cast iron in 1885–86 for Friedrich Hessing, whose orthopaedic clinic stood next door and whose patients needed something to do in the evenings; it opened with an operetta in July 1886. A fire in 1972 burned off the later cladding and exposed the original ironwork, which is what prompted the restoration that ran from 1990 to 1998. Hire is room by room — the 410 m² Theatersaal with its parquet, walkway and balcony, the timber-panelled Jean-Keller-Flügel and its mirrored twin the Hessing-Flügel at 120 to 128 seats each, or the Historischer Salon, which has painted walls and a door onto the courtyard. The stage, the lighting rig and the sightlines come with the room, which matters if the speeches and the first dance are meant to be watched rather than half-overheard.

One clarification worth having early: the castle above is a Fugger family residence, privately owned since Jakob III Fugger bought it in 1595, and it is not open to the public. What you can book is the inn at the foot of it, run by the Nemeth family, with a chestnut-shaded beer garden, a terrace, flexible interior rooms for as many as 140 and a handful of bedrooms including a wedding suite. The kitchen works between Austrian and Bavarian-Swabian cooking, and the two-kilometre lime avenue planted in 1840 that climbs from Göggingen is the portrait walk everyone here uses. The postcode is still Augsburg; the day reads as countryside.

The building is an old tram depot on Wertachstraße, about a kilometre and a half from the town hall, kept deliberately raw and fitted with movable furniture so the floor can be cut down for a smaller party. Its unusual asset is the neighbour: the Mazda Classic Automobil Museum Frey shares the site, and couples use the car halls for the ceremony, for drinks or simply as a backdrop nobody else's photographs will have. The house sells one all-inclusive package — exclusive use, a three-course buffet, an open bar, staff, lighting and sound — from eighty guests upwards. One quote covers the whole evening, which is the real argument for booking here rather than assembling eleven suppliers.

Steel, concrete and a ceiling that runs to twenty-one metres — this is the largest and least polite room on the list, built into a former factory and now split into a 400 m² Mainfloor with a gallery above it, a Blackbox that holds 250 standing, with its own bar and DJ stage, and an outdoor terrace. Couples usually take the Mainfloor for dinner and hand the Blackbox to the late half of the night, which is why it works for guest lists that would rattle around a hotel ballroom. Catering can come from house partners or from an outside firm, and there is a kitchen with cold storage on site. Sixty people at a candlelit dinner would be lost in here; three hundred and a proper sound system would not.

The Eiskanal is the oldest purpose-built canoe slalom course in the world, dug in 1970 off an existing ice-diversion channel and used for the sport's Olympic debut in 1972; since 2019 it has been inscribed with the rest of Augsburg's water management system on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The event hall belongs to that complex — 250 m², with a terrace that opens straight onto the racing line, so guests spend the aperitif watching paddlers work the gates. Hire is €1,350 for the room, with a full commercial kitchen and bar on site and catering brought in from partner firms, and rafting on the course can be added for the day before. In the Fottner family since 1828, this working estate on a wooded ridge above the Lechfeld rents out two very different rooms. The Tenne is the main one: over 600 m² of genuine threshing barn, high roof, exposed timber, heatable in winter by wood chips cut from the estate's own forest, and it seats anywhere from 90 to 200 depending on how the tables go in. Below it a vaulted cellar handles smaller dinners. Outside there is a cottage garden with lounge seating by the entrance, a covered terrace for the aperitif and 500 parking spaces, which quietly solves the problem every rural venue near Augsburg otherwise creates.

Planning a wedding in Augsburg

Germany recognises only a civil marriage performed by a registrar, and Augsburg — unlike Munich, Bonn or Hamburg — operates no scheme that sends one out to hotels and castles. There are three options and no others: the register office at Maximilianstraße 69, Monday to Friday mornings plus the first Saturday morning of the month, capped at 25 people including the couple; the seminar room at the Botanischer Garten on one date a month from April to October, 40 people, €230; and the assembly room of the old Haunstetten town hall on the second Friday of the month, 40 people, €150. Because of that, almost every Augsburg wedding is a two-address day, and one more date needs designing around: 8 August is the Hohes Friedensfest, a legal public holiday inside the city boundary and nowhere else in Germany, which shuts council offices in the middle of the season.

When to marry — May to September carries the season, partly because so much of what Augsburg venues offer is outdoors — beer gardens, terraces, courtyards — and partly because the Botanischer Garten ceremony dates exist only between April and October, with late September the quietest good-weather week once the Friedensfest and the Bavarian school holidays are behind you.

Can we be legally married at our Augsburg wedding venue?

No. Augsburg runs no travelling-registrar scheme, so the civil ceremony can only take place in one of three rooms: the register office at Maximilianstraße 69, which holds 25 people including the couple and marries Monday to Friday mornings plus the first Saturday morning of the month; the seminar room at the Botanischer Garten, 40 people, €230, on one date a month between April and October; or the assembly room in the old Haunstetten town hall, 40 people, €150, on the second Friday of the month. A church service or a celebrant-led ceremony at Kloster Holzen, Schloss Blumenthal or anywhere else carries no legal weight on its own, so build the day around the registry slot and treat the venue as the second address.

We do not live in Germany. What paperwork do we need to marry in Augsburg?

You register the intended marriage with the Standesamt in person; the fee is usually €55–115 and rises where a foreign legal system, or a divorce granted abroad, has to be assessed. Anyone subject to another country's law is normally asked for an Ehefähigkeitszeugnis, a certificate confirming no impediment to marriage, issued by the home authorities. Augsburg also expects a residence connection — you should already have registered the marriage with the register office covering your German address, or, if you have no German address, at least one of you should have been resident in Augsburg previously. The minimum lead time is four weeks and foreign documentation routinely takes longer, so many overseas couples complete the civil marriage at home and hold a celebrant-led ceremony in Augsburg instead; if you do that, the Augsburg ceremony is symbolic and the legal marriage is the one performed in your own country.

How far ahead should we book, and how hard is a Saturday?

Two separate queues, and the registrar is the tight one: there is a single Saturday morning of ceremonies a month at Maximilianstraße 69, and if that Saturday falls on a holiday it slides to the second. The garden and Haunstetten dates are published a full year and more ahead — the Botanischer Garten list already runs into 2027 — so pick your registry date first and fit the venue to it. Private venues are more forgiving: Depot29, the Kesselhaus and the Alpenhof take bookings well over a year out, but the Alpenhof alone hosts more than fifty weddings a year, so peak Saturdays there go early. Registration itself needs a minimum of four weeks, more if foreign documents are involved.

It depends entirely on whether you are buying a package or an empty room.
