The 10 best wedding venues in Nuremberg

Most Nuremberg weddings begin inside the old walls and finish just outside them. The register office marries couples in the ceremony room at the Kaiserburg, in the Renaissance Hirsvogelsaal beside the Tucherschloss and in the Königssalon at the DB Museum, while the celebration itself lands at the Richard-Wagner-Saal in the Le Méridien Grand Hotel, the Bootshaus on the Dutzendteich or the Loftwerk, a listed shoe factory on Ulmenstraße. Drive fifteen minutes out and the character changes: Schloss Faber-Castell in Stein and the barns of Gut Wolfgangshof near Zirndorf, both put up by the same pencil-making family in the 1900s. Because German law recognises only a civil ceremony, almost every Nuremberg wedding is a two-address day.

The imperial castle on the sandstone ridge above the old town keeps one 60 m² room set aside for the register office, furnished with sixty chairs and a ceremony table and nothing else. It is a ceremony address only — the Bavarian palace administration permits no catering and bans candles outright — so the party has to move on afterwards. Getting there means cobbles through both courtyards, which matters if anyone in the group uses a wheelchair or is committed to thin heels. Bookings go through Nuremberg's Standesamt rather than the castle, and the city charges its landmark surcharge on top of the palace hire fee.

Two buildings share one walled plot off Hirschelgasse: the Tucher merchant family's summer house, built between 1533 and 1544 and now a city museum, and the Hirsvogelsaal, a sixteenth-century banqueting room extended at the rear with a modern foyer holding the kitchen, cloakroom and lavatories. The hall itself is about 95 m² and seats seventy at tables; the terraced Renaissance garden behind it, with fruit trees, a rose trellis and a fountain, comes with the booking but cannot be hired separately. Because the city runs both the museum and a register-office slot here, this is one of the few Nuremberg addresses where the legal ceremony and the dinner can happen in the same courtyard. The Schlossfoyer next door, with its late-Gothic vaulting and a window from Dürer's workshop, takes forty for a smaller sit-down.

What couples come for is the Richard-Wagner-Saal, a listed neoclassical room built around the inner courtyard during the 1911–12 expansion, with stucco, mirrors and wall paintings taken from Wagner's operas — and one of the few central Nuremberg interiors to come through 1945 essentially untouched. The hotel opened in 1896 and now runs 192 rooms and eight event spaces, so a long guest list can eat, dance and sleep without going outside. The Albrecht-Dürer-Saal handles smaller parties of around 120. Standing directly across from the main station and a short walk from the Königstor, it is the sensible choice when most of the guest list arrives by train.

Water on the doorstep is scarce in Nuremberg, and this is where it exists — the building sits on the bank of the Dutzendteich, the lake behind the Zeppelinfeld, with a terrace running down to the edge. Celebrant-led ceremonies happen out on that terrace, after which everyone moves into a plainly modern room with full-height windows and a Mediterranean kitchen working from regional suppliers. Seventy to a hundred and ten guests is the comfortable wedding range, though the site as a whole is licensed for a good deal more. Parking, for once, is not a problem: the Zeppelinfeld lot next door is free and vast, and the site is step-free throughout.

A heritage-protected shoe-factory building on Ulmenstraße supplies the shell — high ceilings, deep windows, bare brick — and a curtain system splits the 570 m² floor so the ceremony, the dinner and the dance floor can take turns in the same room. Numbers run from twenty to three hundred and fifty, with weddings usually settling near two hundred. Catering is not a separate decision: the space is only let together with the in-house food and service package, sound system included. The floor is fully barrier-free and there is public parking directly across the street.

Count Alexander and Countess Ottilie von Faber-Castell had Theodor von Kramer build this between 1903 and 1906, and a striking amount of what they installed — panelling, mirrors, the Louis-Seize salon — is still in the rooms. Hire is floor by floor: the Kaminhalle, Musikzimmer and Spiegelzimmer on the ground floor, the Gobelinsaal and Ballsaal at the top, running 114 to 144 m². The 139 m² Wintergarten under its aluminium dome opens straight onto the terrace, the park and the small house chapel, which is where most ceremonies take place and where a short church service is possible. Stein is a few kilometres beyond the city boundary, so budget for taxis or a coach at the end of the night.

Twelve kilometres west of the city stands an art-nouveau farm ensemble that Count Alexander von Faber-Castell commissioned in 1902 and named after his eldest son, run first as a model farm with electric light and a wind motor, then for dairy and horse breeding, and used for events since 1994. Three spaces are let. The Tenne is a threshing barn with its roof timbers fully exposed; the Rinderstall keeps its cast-iron columns and the old feeding troughs, which now get filled with ice and bottles; and the Mittelhalle is the lighter, more conventional room at roughly 300 m². Both big halls reach about 600 m² and four hundred guests, and the open grounds take the same number when the weather cooperates — which makes this the obvious choice for a large family wedding that wants the whole place to itself.

Friedrich Bürklein designed a neo-Gothic waiting room for Bavarian royalty at the old Nuremberg station in 1860, on the orders of King Max II. The station came down in 1906, the panelled interior was kept, and in 1925 it was rebuilt inside the railway museum, where it is now the Königssalon. The register office marries couples there on five dates a year in half-hour slots between 10am and 1.30pm, for €420 on top of the standard charges, with thirty-three guests the ceiling and no reception afterwards. Photographs are allowed in the salon, the north staircase, the ground-floor foyer and the locomotive hall, and dates are released through the city's Traukalender rather than by the museum.

Locals call the house on Campestraße the Schlösschen, a small rococo building that has doubled as a dance school and a hire venue for decades. The Ballsaal has beech parquet laid for dancing, carved rococo doorways, stucco, chandeliers and a bay window that usually ends up holding the band or the gift table, and seats around a hundred. The oval Gartensaal has oak parquet and looks onto the garden and its fountain, taking fifty, while celebrant-led ceremonies are generally held outside on the terrace. Since the house teaches dancing for a living, the first-dance lessons are an in-house arrangement rather than another supplier to chase.

The Prasser furniture works occupied this Kleinreuther Weg site from 1908 until 1999, and the event salon now sits inside the old workshop with the restaurant and a list of more than 800 wines attached. A hundred and sixty sit down inside; in summer the ceremony happens in the garden of the Kutscher-Haus, with a covered room next door for the afternoons Franconia decides otherwise. The kitchen is Mediterranean rather than Franconian, and the team has been running weddings from this address since 2001. It sits north of the old walls, close enough for taxis but not a walk back to a Hauptmarkt hotel.

Planning a wedding in Nuremberg

Only a registrar can marry you in Germany, and Nuremberg's Standesamt performs ceremonies at a fixed list of addresses booked through one online Traukalender — the Kaiserburg takes 58 people, the Tucherschloss 47, the DB Museum 33, the Schürstabhaus 28, and since April 2026 the pitch at the Max-Morlock-Stadion, where fifty guests walk out through the players' tunnel for a €500 surcharge. Registration costs €50, the landmark rooms add roughly €290 to €500 on top, a Saturday another €100 and a foreign passport in the file another €70; applications pile up in January and the good slots vanish within days of release, with the Tucherschloss reporting itself largely booked for Friday and Saturday hires to the end of October by the first week of August. The date to design around is the Christkindlesmarkt, 25 November to 24 December, when city-centre hotel rates run two to four times their January level and guest accommodation quietly becomes the biggest line in the budget.

When to marry — May to September carries the season, since the terrace at the Bootshaus, the Renaissance garden at the Tucherschloss and the Kutscher-Haus garden are the reason to book those places at all, and late September is often the best week of the lot: still warm enough to eat outdoors, past the Bavarian school holidays and well before the Christmas market takes over the centre.

Marrying in Nuremberg: your questions.

Can we be legally married at our Nuremberg venue, or only at the register office?

Germany recognises only a civil marriage conducted by a registrar. Nuremberg's Standesamt will marry you in its own Trausäle and at a set list of landmarks — the Kaiserburg, Tucherschloss, Fembohaus, Schürstabhaus, Pellerschloss, DB Museum and, since April 2026, the Max-Morlock-Stadion — but not at a hotel, a barn or a lakeside terrace. A celebrant-led freie Trauung at the Bootshaus, Gut Wolfgangshof or Loftwerk carries no legal weight on its own, which is why most couples take a registry slot in the morning and treat the venue as the second address. Note that the Kaiserburg and DB Museum rooms are ceremony-only: no catering at either, and no candles at the castle.

We live abroad. What paperwork do we need to marry in Nuremberg?

Every non-German partner needs an Ehefähigkeitszeugnis, a certificate of no impediment from their home authorities, translated and generally apostilled. Several countries — the UK, the United States and Australia among them — do not issue one at all, in which case the file goes to the president of the Oberlandesgericht for a Befreiung, an exemption that takes months and carries its own fee. If neither of you has ever been registered as resident in Germany, the eligibility check is handled by Standesamt I in Berlin, not by Nuremberg. Put plainly: if that timeline does not fit your date, marry legally at home first and hold a celebrant-led ceremony here — the German paperwork, not the venue, is the long pole.

How far ahead should we book, and which dates go first?

Applications concentrate in January, when the year's couples file at once, and the landmark ceremony rooms disappear within days of the calendar opening. Saturday slots are the tightest of all, and not every Nuremberg register office holds them — Nürnberg-Nord marries on Saturday mornings, while Nürnberg-Ost does its Saturday ceremonies at the Pellerschloss. Twelve to eighteen months is realistic for a Saturday between May and September; the Tucherschloss was already reporting itself largely booked for Friday and Saturday hires through to the end of October by the first week of August. No ceremonies take place on Sundays or public holidays.

How many guests can a Nuremberg wedding actually take?

The ceremony is the bottleneck, not the party. The registry rooms cap out low — 58 at the Kaiserburg, 47 at the Tucherschloss, 33 at the DB Museum, 28 at the Schürstabhaus — so a guest list much above sixty simply will not fit in the landmark rooms, and couples either take a plain Trausaal with immediate family and add everyone else at the reception, or hire a celebrant for a second ceremony at the venue. Receptions have far more headroom: 160 at the VINERIA, around 200 at the Loftwerk, 250 in the Richard-Wagner-Saal and up to 400 in either of the big halls at Gut Wolfgangshof. Work out which room the ceremony has to happen in before you settle the guest list.
