Innsbruck weddings are shaped by one local rule: the registrar marries you in the Trauungssaal at the Goldenes Dachl, or at exactly two other addresses — the Congresspark Igls and the Villa Blanka — so most couples separate the legal ceremony from the celebration. The party then goes to a Habsburg state room such as the Riesensaal in the Kaiserliche Hofburg, up the Nordkette to the Restaurant Seegrube at 1,905 metres, into Zaha Hadid's ski-jump tower at Bergisel SKY, or to the walled garden at Schloss Büchsenhausen. The Riesensaal runs 31.5 by 13 metres under an eleven-metre ceiling, tall windows alternating along its length with dark oil portraits of the imperial family. In August 1765 the public banquet for the marriage of Maria Theresa's son Leopold of Tuscany was laid out in this room, the adjoining audience chamber having proved too small. The palace is federal property let by the day rather than by the plate, so you engage your own caterer and pay a published tariff — €11,065 plus VAT in the shoulder months, more the rest of the year. One of only two addresses outside the Goldenes Dachl where an Innsbruck registrar will conduct a legally binding ceremony, which makes this the practical answer for anyone who wants vows and dinner under one roof. The building went up in 2007 and is glazed on every side, standing in parkland at just over 900 metres with mountains on all points of the compass; the 310-square-metre Saal Panorama, the transBARent hall, two seminar rooms, a wide foyer and a covered terrace all sit on one level. Its owners deliberately left the place unbranded, so it takes whatever decoration you bring rather than imposing a style. Igls is about fifteen minutes from the old town by car and is also the terminus of the city tram.

Innsbruck's other licensed ceremony address sits on the slope below the Hungerburg, with the whole grid of the city laid out beneath its terrace. The event centre belongs to the Tourismusschulen Villa Blanka, Innsbruck's hospitality college, which explains a kitchen and a service brigade rather better than the moderate per-head budget would suggest. Around 1,100 square metres are usable in total, split between a 650-square-metre banqueting hall for 250 and a smaller restaurant-and-lounge combination for 120, with a chapel on the grounds and a sun terrace for the reception. Gregor Löffler, whose foundry below the house cast cannon — Büchsen, hence the name — and the first figure for Maximilian I's tomb, had the master builder Gregor Türing put up this Ansitz in 1539. Wilhelm Biener, Chancellor of Tyrol until his fall and execution in 1651, bought it a century later, and the Kanzlersaal that couples hire still carries his title: roughly 400 square metres of vaulting for anywhere between 50 and 140 guests. The garden is the reason most people choose it — gravel paths, ivy climbing the trees, a small fountain and an unobstructed view down over the city, which makes it unusually good for a drinks reception. An onion-domed clock tower from around 1700 and a 1688 portal carrying a sandstone St John Nepomuk face the little courtyard between the two wings.

Guests board the funicular on the Rennweg in the old town and are at 1,905 metres roughly twenty minutes later, having changed once onto the cable car. The ground floor holds 150 between the main room and the adjoining Kaminzimmer, and in decent weather the reception happens on the terrace above the city lights. One constraint is worth putting in writing before you book: the restaurant is yours exclusively only from six in the evening, because until then the cable cars keep delivering day visitors who also need feeding. Zaha Hadid's 2001 rebuild of the Bergisel jump set a fifty-metre tower on the ridge, and the restaurant inside it — reached by an inclined lift — is glazed the whole way round, 250 metres above the rooftops. It seats 120 and is let exclusively from seven in the evening until one, which fits a dinner and a first dance but not a full day. Larger or daytime gatherings move down the hill to the Restaurant 1809 beside the TIROL PANORAMA museum, quieter and more conventional but with the same outlook. In the surrounding park, the Gloriette pavilion with its shallow wooden dome is where most couples end up being photographed.

Slotted into a courtyard of the Congress complex in 2000, this is 255 square metres under a glass roof with two fully glazed walls and 4.7 metres of headroom over a parquet floor. The courtyard position means daylight and weather register indoors all evening while old masonry shelters the room on the remaining sides, and in warm months the doors simply open. Immediately in front stands the Stöckl, a small sixteenth-century structure that most couples use as the bar or for a separate course. Built in 1893 as the administration building and officers' casino of the Tiroler Kaiserjäger, and still owned by the foundation that commemorates them, this is a straightforward parquet Festsaal with windows on three sides and two steel rods spanning the ceiling for hanging lanterns. Wrapping two sides of the house is a covered timber balcony of 100 square metres, ending in a bay at the north corner that looks out over Innsbruck — the obvious place for the buffet or the aperitif.
