Stuttgart splits a wedding in two: the legal ceremony happens in a listed room the city controls, and the party happens somewhere else. Registrars marry couples in the Marmorsaal of the Neues Schloss on Schlossplatz, in the Weißer Saal at Schloss Solitude on the ridge west of the city, 144 metres up the SWR Fernsehturm in Degerloch and in the auditorium of the Theaterschiff, a converted freight ship moored in Bad Cannstatt. Receptions then move outward — to the 1913 Marmorsaal above the Weißenburgpark, the glasshouse and threshing barn at Der Sonnenhof in Mühlhausen, the Stromberg wine estates above Vaihingen an der Enz, or the columnless timber hall of the Alte Kelter in Fellbach. Expect a short ceremony under state-owned chandeliers and a drive of twenty to forty minutes to wherever dinner actually is.

Duke Carl Eugen built this hilltop retreat in the 1760s, and the Weißer Saal he kept for court occasions is now where Stuttgart's registrars work — 150 square metres of modelled wall and painted ceiling, seating eighty, in a 45-minute slot. What you book is strictly the ceremony: conservation rules bar food, drink and celebrations from the historic rooms, so the only thing you can add on site is an hour's drinks reception outdoors, at the north balustrade, under the arcades or at the champagne carriage, for 100–200 €. Decoration is discouraged in a building of this rank, confetti, balloons and drones are banned outright, and the palace closes to museum visitors on wedding days. Dinner has to be somewhere else, which is why most couples here pair the room with a venue down in the city.

Seven silver chandeliers of 1762 hang over the Marmorsaal of the residence the Württemberg dukes and kings built from 1746, and the city releases it for civil ceremonies capped at the couple and sixty-eight guests. Two things come with the address: the couple's car may stand in the Ehrenhof, the enclosed courtyard of honour, for the length of the ceremony, and the room is not step-free — the palace is a working ministry building, not a venue. The published cost sheet lists Friday slots only. Drinks afterwards happen in the cafés around Schlossplatz, both it and the Schlossgarten a minute from the door.

Ernst von Sieglin, who made a fortune in washing powder and spent it on classical antiquities, had Heinrich Henes build this hall into the Bopser slope in 1912–13 — as a garden room beneath his tennis court, which is why it sits below the Teehaus rather than beside it. Julius Mössel painted the interior with water deities and grotesque ornament, so the room reads as a small nymphaeum rather than a ballroom, and Karl Donndorf's travertine reliefs of 1913 flank the facade. Sixty to eighty sit comfortably and a hundred fit with close seating; the terrace in front takes the standing reception, with the city dropping away below it. Catering comes from the hall's own list of partners, and after the last ceremony of the day they can serve inside — a rare thing among Stuttgart's registry rooms.

Height is the entire proposition. The event level sits at 144 metres inside Fritz Leonhardt's 217-metre tower — opened in 1956 as the first television tower anywhere built in reinforced concrete — and the room is circular, glazed the whole way round, with the registrar coming up from Degerloch to conduct the ceremony. Forty guests plus the couple is the hard ceiling, so this is a ceremony and a toast rather than a reception: the day's first two couples can book the Panoramacafé for drinks, the third has to pay to keep the ceremony room longer. Dates come from the Degerloch registry office rather than the tower's ticket desk, and the city's sheet puts the slot on a Friday morning.

At the northern edge of the city, past Mühlhausen, a working farm has been converted into two rooms of opposite temperament. The Glashaus gives 250 square metres of glass for thirty to a hundred and thirty; the Alte Dreschhalle, a threshing barn of the 1930s, takes seventy to three hundred across 400 square metres, with three hectares of grounds around both and storks nesting on the roof. Ceremonies are held outdoors under a lime tree in the garden, and the Roßstall is the wet-weather room — worth walking through on the site visit rather than taking on trust. The farm also runs its own evening childcare, animals included, which is a real consideration at a two-hundred-guest Swabian wedding.

The estate lies in a side valley of the Stromberg above Vaihingen an der Enz, roughly forty minutes north-west, and puts two buildings on the same yard that could hardly be less alike. The Fruchtkasten is the late-baroque granary — half-timber, sandstone, exposed concrete and glass, 350 square metres on two levels, up to a hundred people. The Feldscheune is the counterweight: 550 square metres, also on two levels and divisible, warm timber over a poured concrete floor, up to two hundred and fifty. Chairs and tables are part of the room rather than a hire line — crossback or grey-stained banquet chairs, round eights and rectangular sixes — and the winery behind it is genuinely small, two and a half hectares of Lemberger, Riesling and Spätburgunder worked by hand.

Eberhard Ludwig put an octagonal pavilion on this lake in 1714; the palace itself was begun under Carl Eugen in 1760, abandoned half-built for forty years, then finished in 1804 for King Friedrich I, who gave it the name. The estate around it still belongs to the House of Württemberg — 250 hectares of English-style park, the Herzog von Württemberg winery, an eighteen-hole golf course and the hotel. The Seeschloss itself gives 181 square metres and eighty-eight at banquet seating, the vaulted hall fifty-six, with the hall of mirrors and the blue and green salons for smaller sittings. Beds on site matter more than they sound this far out: they remove the last-train problem that shapes half the timings at Stuttgart's city venues.

The Frauenlob is a former freight ship turned working theatre, moored at Mühlgrün on the Neckar, and the Bad Cannstatt registrar comes aboard to handle the legal part in the auditorium. Drinks then move up to the sun deck, with the bar and restaurant on the decks below, and the party can stay on the water. Seventy-eight guests plus the couple is the cap, and there is no step-free route on board. Check the calendar before anything else: the ship shuts for July and August, which rules out the two months couples ask about first.

Fellbach's growers put this up in 1906 as their communal press house, and the reason to hire it is the roof: exposed timber trusses that carry themselves, with no column touching the 2,500 square metres of floor beneath. Fellbach Event & Location runs the building now and quotes four hundred at banquet seating, five hundred for a gala and six hundred in rows, with partitions to shrink the room and the stage placed wherever you want it. Trade fairs and vehicle launches are the day job, so the hall comes to you empty — catering, decoration and lighting are all yours to bring, which cuts both ways. It is the answer for the very large Swabian wedding, where three hundred guests is ordinary and every smaller hall in the region has already said no.

Planning a wedding in Stuttgart

The landmark rooms are Wunschtrauorte booked through a district registry office rather than through the building, and the caps are tighter than couples assume: the Fernsehturm takes the couple plus forty, the Neues Schloss the couple plus sixty-eight, the Theaterschiff the couple plus seventy-eight. Schloss Solitude is the strictest — listed-building rules bar catering and celebrations from the historic rooms altogether, leaving only an hour's drinks reception outdoors — and it marries on just one Friday and one Saturday a month from May to October, releasing the following year's dates on 1 July through traukalender.stuttgart.de, where the good Saturdays go within days. Two more traps worth knowing: the Damaszenerhalle in the Wilhelma, long one of the prettiest ceremony rooms in the city, has taken no weddings since 2026 while the building is restored, and the Theaterschiff closes for July and August. Finally, check the Wasen calendar before you fix a date — the Cannstatter Volksfest runs 25 September to 11 October 2026 and the Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest 17 April to 9 May 2027, and both fill the city's hotels.

Can we legally marry in Stuttgart if neither of us lives in Germany?

You can, but only the civil ceremony at a Standesamt carries legal force in Germany — a church blessing or free ceremony has no legal effect on its own and does not substitute for it. Non-residents must produce an Ehefähigkeitszeugnis, a certificate of no impediment; if you have never lived in Germany, Standesamt I in Berlin is the office that issues it. Where your home country does not issue such a certificate at all, the registry office forwards your file to the president of the Oberlandesgericht for an exemption, which commonly adds weeks and can run to months. Many foreign couples find it far simpler to complete the civil marriage at home first and hold a free ceremony at a Stuttgart venue for the day itself.

How far ahead do we need to book?

The state rooms run on a fixed release cycle rather than first-come enquiry. Schloss Solitude publishes the following year's dates on 1 July via traukalender.stuttgart.de — the 2027 dates went live on 1 July 2026 — and offers only one Friday and one Saturday a month between May and October, so the popular Saturdays disappear almost immediately. The Fernsehturm is arranged through the Degerloch registry office and the Neues Schloss, Marmorsaal and Theaterschiff through their own district offices, all bookable in the same online calendar. Private venues in the region — Steinbachhof, Der Sonnenhof, Monrepos — are commonly taken twelve to eighteen months out for Saturdays between May and September.

Are there dates in Stuttgart we should avoid?

Two festivals on the Cannstatter Wasen. The Volksfest, Germany's second-largest folk festival, runs 25 September to 11 October 2026, and the Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest 17 April to 9 May 2027; both fill the city's hotels, and the cheaper rooms go first. If your date has to fall in one of those windows, block rooms early in Ludwigsburg, Esslingen or Sindelfingen, all of which are on the S-Bahn. July and August bring the other problem: the city sits in a basin that traps humid heat, and the Theaterschiff is closed for both months anyway.
