The 10 best wedding venues in Regensburg

Most Regensburg weddings stay inside the UNESCO old town, within a few hundred metres of the cathedral: the Salzstadel's two halls beside the Steinerne Brücke, the Herzogssaal on Domplatz, which Bavaria's dukes used as an assembly hall from 976, the SORAT Insel-Hotel on its own small Danube island, and the Wirtshaus im Heuport directly facing the cathedral front. Brauhaus am Schloss seats dinner among its copper brewing kettles, and the Rosenpalais adds a baroque garden on the eastern edge of the centre. Couples wanting more space head out of the city to Rittergut Grafenried at Sinzing or Schloss Pirkensee in the Oberpfalz. The old salt store at the foot of the stone bridge was converted into two large halls, the Brück-Saal and the Kräncher-Saal, each around 330 to 355 square metres, with a foyer and a smaller conference room between them. The interior is deliberately restrained — plain modern surfaces against the original structure — which suits couples who want the building to do the work rather than the decoration. This baroque townhouse on the eastern edge of the centre hires out four spaces that can be mixed: the Oktagonsaal, the Roter Salon, a bar with garden rooms attached, and the garden itself. Catering is by the house kitchen, which has won awards in its own right, and the station is about 600 metres away.

Klinger's fleet is the only way to be legally married on the Danube here: the registrar comes aboard the MS Fürstin Gloria one Friday afternoon a month, and the same boat is chartered privately for the reception. The smaller Siebnerin, a wooden replica of a historic salt barge, takes 80 at tables and sits low enough that the open deck is nearly at water level.

The register office uses just three rooms — the Kleines Kurfürstenzimmer in the Altes Rathaus with about 20 seats, a modern room in the Bürger- und Verwaltungszentrum with roughly ten, and the MS Fürstin Gloria on the third Friday of each month — and nearly every slot is in the morning, finishing by noon, so the rest of the day has to be built around an early start. Dates open exactly one year ahead and the online calendar only accepts couples where both partners are German citizens and one is registered as living in Regensburg; everyone else has to go through the Standesamt directly. Confetti and rice are not allowed outside the Altes Rathaus, though a short sparkling-wine reception on the Rathausplatz is fine, and city hotel rooms get scarce during the Herbstdult, which runs 28 August to 13 September in 2026.

Can a couple from abroad legally get married in Regensburg?

Yes, but the paperwork is slow and it has to be done before anything else is fixed. Germany recognises only a civil marriage performed by a registrar, so a ceremony at Grafenried, Pirkensee or any hotel carries no legal weight on its own. Foreign nationals submit both partners' details through the Standesamt's online form and receive a written statement, costing €25, listing the documents required; originals must then be handed in or posted, and depending on nationality either a certificate of no impediment from the home country or an additional review by the Oberlandesgericht Nürnberg is needed. A ceremony date can only be reserved once all of that has cleared, which is why many overseas couples marry legally at home first and hold a celebrant-led ceremony here.

How far ahead do we need to book a Regensburg wedding?

Ceremony slots open exactly one year in advance, released in real time to the minute — a 10:00 Saturday date becomes bookable at 10:20 on the same day the previous year. The registry office says free dates exist year-round because it offers more slots than it fills, but the desirable ones are thin: roughly two designated Saturdays a month, and one Friday afternoon on the boat. Venues move on a different clock; Brauhaus am Schloss alone handles 40 to 50 weddings a year, so a summer Saturday there is worth asking about well before the registry date is confirmed. Multiple provisional registry bookings are automatically deleted, so you cannot hold two dates.

The old town runs small, so a long guest list narrows the field quickly. In the centre, Brauhaus am Schloss takes up to 400 across its indoor and outdoor areas and the Salzstadel's Brück-Saal holds 200 standing, though only 140 at banquet tables; the Wirtshaus im Heuport's Festsaal caps at 150. Outside the city, Rittergut Grafenried is the most flexible, with a 350-square-metre Barockstadel and 200 seats under the open Pavillonstadel. Note the constraint at the other end of the day: the registry rooms in town seat about 20 and about 10, so with a large guest list only a handful will actually witness the legal ceremony.
