Bregenz weddings sort themselves by altitude. Up on the Gebhardsberg the Burgrestaurant holds the party inside a fortress the Swedish army blew apart in 1647; down at the harbour it is PIER 69 and the Vorarlberg Lines ships, which either circle the bay or stay tied up at Seestraße 4; in between sit the GrandHotel Bregenz MGallery, a few minutes from the Seebühne, and the Aula Bernardi, the Cistercian abbey's former cider cellar at Kloster Mehrerau. One structural fact shapes every plan here: the venue you book is almost never where you legally marry. The Counts of Bregenz raised a fortress on this hill before 1097; Swedish troops took it in 1647 and destroyed it the same year with five mines, and a pilgrimage church to St Gebhard was built inside the ruined palas in 1723, burned down in 1791 and was rebuilt in its present form immediately after. What survives now works as a restaurant looking down the Rhine valley to the lake. The Montfortsaal is the main room at 140 square metres, renovated in 2006/07 to plans by the architect Walter Holzmüller, seating 150 at banquet tables or 100 on rounds, with a partition for splitting it; the Pavillon in the medieval courtyard takes 40 to 110 from April to October and 30 to 80 heated through winter. Smaller parties get the Burgstüble under a fifteenth-century Gothic ceiling, or the Burgvinothek for 30 among thousand-year-old walls. The chapel seats up to 100 but is booked through the Bregenz parish office, not the restaurant.

The address does most of the explaining: Platz der Wiener Symphoniker 2 puts the hotel between the water and the Festspielhaus, a few steps from the floating stage and the festival casino, which matters if half your guest list is flying in for the opera anyway. It is the only entry here that solves ceremony, dinner and beds inside one building. Four daylit function rooms cover anything from 5 to 230 people between them; the 240-square-metre Bodensee room is the one to ask about for a wedding, rated at 200 in rows and 130 at seminar tables, with three 80-square-metre rooms named Lindau, Bregenz and Arbon for the smaller end of the day. Frédéric Vardon oversees the kitchen, and Jurgen Lingl Rebetez's carved horse in the lobby is what guests photograph before they find their table.

Before it was a hall this was the Cistercian abbey's Mostkeller, the cider cellar; the building is listed, and the monastery around it is still a working community a short walk from the lakeshore. The Festsaal takes 60 to 128 seated, with a separate bar for the late end of the night and a cloakroom and spare room that can be folded into the plan. The courtyard is what really sells it — old trees, wide lawns, step-free access, room enough to run the drinks reception outdoors and let children off the leash. Catering is not open: Ländle Gastronomie holds the contract and plans the day with you, so a couple set on their own chef should look elsewhere.

Seestraße 4 is the harbour building and PIER 69 has the restaurant side of it: 80 seated in a maritime room with a generous bar, cleared to a dance floor after dessert if you ask for it. The space couples actually come for is the covered outdoor lounge a few metres from the water, open along one side and roofed over the rest, which the house keeps in use through the winter and treats as the hinge between the reception and whatever follows. The ceremony itself usually happens on a ship's upper deck rather than in the lounge — the Vorarlberg Lines charter desk shares the address, so a party moves from lounge to gangway without changing supplier or crossing town.

Two vessels in the fleet are set aside as wedding ships: MS Alpenstadt Bludenz at 100 guests and MS Stadt Bregenz at 200, the latter with salons that can be emptied of furniture to make a real dance floor. This is the one entry on the list where the legally binding ceremony can happen on site — the Bregenz registry office names the Vorarlberg Lines ships among its four approved outside locations, so a registrar rather than a celebrant can marry you afloat. Bigger guest lists move to MS Vorarlberg at 400 or to the MS Sonnenkönigin, whose ballroom and 360-degree sun deck make it the showpiece of the lake. A charter can circle the Bregenz bay or stay moored in the harbour, which is the version to pick if older relatives dislike the idea of four hours at sea.

Built in 1913 and still working as a paddle steamer, the Hohentwiel is chartered through Historische Schifffahrt Bodensee together with its Art Deco motor sister, MS Oesterreich. Seating divides across a Hecksalon for 63, a Blauer Salon for 32, a Vorschiffsalon for 22 and a small Kapitänssalon — 123 seats in the salons all told — with another 106 chairs on the open deck. Charters come in two standard shapes: a three-hour afternoon circuit built around a cake buffet, or a four-hour evening one around a three-course menu. The captain conducts a ceremony on board, and it is worth being clear-eyed about what that is — under Austrian law a marriage is contracted only before a registrar, so the captain's version is symbolic. The two ships serve 26 harbours between Bregenz and Ludwigshafen, but every charter day starts and ends at Hard.

Fluh sits on the hillside above the city, and this is the highest-lying inn inside the Bregenz boundary — a village Gasthaus still run as one, not converted into something with a concept. Dining rooms, a conservatory and a terrace facing the mountains hold about 100 between them, and the Adler Keller downstairs is where the DJ goes once the tables are cleared. Four double rooms take the closest guests; the couple's night is free and ends with a sparkling breakfast the next morning. Its website is still being rebuilt, so enquire by phone or email rather than hunting for a form.

Lochau begins where Bregenz ends, and the Kaiserstrand's bathing house stands at the very edge of the water on the hotel's own strand — as close to holding a reception in the lake as this shore allows. Smallness is the point: 60 is a hard ceiling, with a Salon at 30 for anything more intimate, and the hotel's motorboat VJU can be added for the couple's arrival or a sunset circuit. Two things the hotel says on its own booking page deserve reading before you fall for it — for summer 2026 every weekend date was gone well before the season, and it accepts no events at all across the Festspiele window, 22 July to 23 August in 2026.

The name comes from the stenter frame that once stretched cloth here for the Wirkerei Wolff knitting mill; the municipality of Hard runs the building as a public event house now and has left the industrial bones visible. The Großer Saal measures 493 square metres and is rated at 450 for a banquet, 550 in rows and 800 standing, with the 103-square-metre Kleiner Rahmen and a 115-square-metre seminar room for smaller parties or break-out space, and the foyer available to fold into the plan. Rooms go singly or the whole building at once, the kitchen is booked separately to whatever scale the day needs, and the house is step-free throughout with an induction loop for hard-of-hearing guests — the practical reasons a Bregenz guest list sometimes ends up five kilometres west.

This one earns its place for the ceremony, not the party. The tower began in the first half of the thirteenth century as a granary in the counts' first courtyard, and the Graubünden master builder Benedetto Prato raised it three storeys between 1599 and 1601, crowning it with the shingled onion dome on a square plan that has been the city's emblem ever since. Its Martinskapelle was endowed in 1362 by Wilhelm VII of Montfort and carries frescoes painted around 1362 and 1420, whitewashed over in 1648 and uncovered again by the painter Florus Scheel between 1910 and 1914; the nave was added from 1701 and consecrated in 1705. Church weddings are arranged through the Haus der Kirche Bregenz, and the tower is separately one of the four sites where the registry office will conduct a civil ceremony. There is no step-free route in, which rules it out for some guest lists.

Planning a wedding in Bregenz

The Bregenz registry office marries couples on the first floor of the Rathaus at Rathausstraße 4 — 40 seats, lift access, no extra room charge in the council chamber — and permits Sondertrauungen at exactly four outside locations: the Martinsturm, the ships of the Vorarlberg Lines, Villa Grünau in Kennelbach and the Altes Schulhüsle in Lochau. The timing is what catches people out. Ceremonies run Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 11:00 and 14:00 to 16:00, and the outside locations offer only an 11:00 or a 16:00 slot, so a Saturday civil wedding is not on the menu and most couples marry on the Friday and run the party into Saturday. Then there is the festival: the Bregenzer Festspiele take over the town for a month from around 21 July — 21 July to 22 August in 2027 — and at least one venue on this list, the Seehotel am Kaiserstrand, refuses events outright across that window.

When to marry — Early September is the shrewd choice: the Festspiele crowds have gone by the fourth week of August, the lake is still warm, and the month takes 148 mm of rain across about eleven wet days against June's 198 mm across fourteen and a half, June being the wettest month of the Bregenz year.

Can we legally marry in Bregenz if neither of us lives in Austria?

Yes, and this is where Austria differs from Switzerland an hour down the lake. Austrian law lets people who hold neither Austrian citizenship nor an Austrian residence marry in Austria, and the marriage is legally effective once concluded before an Austrian registrar. You do not need to complete a separate civil ceremony at home first. Two things do need checking: whether your own country imposes stricter conditions before it will recognise the marriage — your embassy in Austria is the place to ask — and whether the certificate needs an apostille or legalisation for use back home, which depends on the treaties between Austria and that state. Notice of marriage can be lodged at any Austrian registry office and is forwarded on to Bregenz.

Where does the civil ceremony actually take place?

Not at your venue, in almost every case. The Trauraum is on the first floor of the Rathaus at Rathausstraße 4, seats 40, has lift access and a Bluetooth speaker for music, and carries no extra room charge in the council chamber. Bregenz also permits Sondertrauungen at four locations: the Martinsturm, the ships of the Vorarlberg Lines, Villa Grünau in Kennelbach and the Altes Schulhüsle in Lochau — each arranged with the registry office and the operator together, and priced by the operator. Ceremonies run Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 11:00 and 14:00 to 16:00, and the outside locations offer only an 11:00 or a 16:00 slot. Note too that a church wedding, whether at the Martinskapelle or at Kloster Mehrerau, has no civil effect in Austria on its own.

What does a wedding in Bregenz cost?

Venues here quote hire and catering separately, so the honest answer is a set of published numbers rather than an average. The Burgrestaurant Gebhardsberg's 2026 banqueting brochure asks €500 to hire the Montfortsaal and €700 for the Pavillon, sets a flat €500 for a free ceremony in the castle courtyard including the marquee, power supply and ceremony table, adds €5 a chair, and prices set menus between €48 and €74 a head with buffets from €54 to €75. Exclusivity is the line that moves a budget: taking the entire first floor there carries a €12,000 minimum spend. Treat that as the shape of the market rather than the market rate — the Spannrahmen in Hard lets you bring your own caterer and charges room hire alone, while the hotel and the ship charters bundle everything and quote on request.

How far ahead should we book, and which dates are worth avoiding?

The Bregenzer Festspiele dominate the calendar. The 2027 season runs 21 July to 22 August, opening on the floating stage on 22 July, and across that month the town's rooms, restaurants and staff are already committed — the Seehotel am Kaiserstrand stated outright that it would take no events between 22 July and 23 August 2026, and had lost every summer weekend date long before that season began. Book the venue well ahead and the paperwork late: notice of marriage is valid for a maximum of six months and therefore cannot be filed earlier than that, although the ceremony slot itself can be reserved with the registry office much further ahead. Because Bregenz does not perform civil ceremonies at weekends, the real availability sits midweek in May, June and September.
