We live abroad — can we legally marry in Pforzheim, or do we need to do it at home?

In Germany only a civil ceremony conducted by a Standesamt creates a marriage; a church service or a celebrant-led 'freie Trauung' at the Altes Kurhotel or the Hohenwart Forum has no legal effect on its own. Foreign nationals can marry at a German registry office, but the paperwork is assessed case by case: Pforzheim asks you to send passport scans and residence details in advance, then issues a document list specific to your nationalities, and originals must be produced.
