Only a Standesamt registrar can marry you in Germany, and Heidelberg's works a fixed rota: Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:00 to 14:30 in half-hour slots, plus Saturday mornings, with a €110 surcharge on any Friday slot from 13:00 and on every Saturday ceremony. At the time of writing the Spiegelsaal and the castle could only be booked for dates falling within 2026, and castle ceremonies run on set Saturdays at 11:00 and 13:00 only — the two most-wanted rooms in the city are also the two with the shortest booking horizon. If the reception is up on the Schlossberg, settle guest transport early: the Bergbahn funicular stops running in the evening, around 20:00 in the summer timetable and considerably earlier in winter, and the historic wooden cars on the upper section to Königstuhl finish sooner still, which leaves taxis or a hired coach down the hairpins.

Can we legally marry at a Heidelberg venue, or only at the registry office?

Germany recognises only a civil marriage performed by a Standesamt registrar; a church service or a celebrant-led ceremony carries no legal weight on its own. Heidelberg's registrar officiates in three places — the historic Trauzimmer in the Rathaus, the Spiegelsaal at Palais Prinz Carl, and Schloss Heidelberg — so if you want the legal ceremony and the reception in the same building, the Palais is the venue that does both. Everywhere else on this list hosts a free ceremony and the party, with the legal formality done separately beforehand, usually at the Rathaus that morning.

We don't live in Germany. Can we still get married in Heidelberg?

Yes, and if neither of you has a residence in Germany the Standesamt where the ceremony will take place is the office that accepts your marriage registration. Both of you will need a certificate of no impediment (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis) from your home authorities, valid for six months from issue, alongside passports and birth certificates, and German offices normally want foreign documents translated and legalised. Heidelberg's own registry warns that cases involving foreign paperwork can take one to several months to process, so start well before you fix a date. If that timetable does not work, a common fallback is to complete the legal civil marriage at home and hold a celebrant ceremony in Heidelberg — but be clear that such a ceremony creates no marriage under German law.

How far ahead should we book?

Registry slots are typically arranged several months out and spontaneous dates are the exception, particularly for Saturdays. The venues run further ahead still: at the time of writing Palais Prinz Carl had already closed to new wedding enquiries for 2027 and was referring couples to sister venues, while the Spiegelsaal and castle ceremony slots were only bookable for dates within 2026. Twelve to eighteen months is a realistic lead time for a summer Saturday, and the sensible order is to secure the registrar's slot first, then the reception venue around it.

How many guests can we actually have in Heidelberg?

The ceremony room, not the reception, is usually the binding constraint. Civil ceremonies at Schloss Heidelberg are capped at 40 guests and the Spiegelsaal at 132, whereas the reception spaces are far larger — the Marriott ballroom takes 350 for a reception, the Molkenkur around 300 seated, the castle's Königssaal 264, the Frauenbad 200 and BETRIEBSWERK 130. Couples with a big guest list commonly hold a small legal ceremony with immediate family, then open the day out for a free ceremony and dinner at the reception venue.
