Planning a wedding in Iowa
Iowa is one of the few states that still imposes a waiting period. Under Iowa Code 595.4 the county registrar issues the license as soon as your verified application is filed, but the license does not become valid until three days after it is issued — so an out-of-state couple landing Thursday for a Saturday wedding will miss it unless a district court judge validates the license early on grounds of emergency or extraordinary circumstances, a separate application carrying its own $5 fee that is not granted automatically. There is no residency or citizenship requirement, and a license from any county can be used anywhere in the state, so applying early somewhere convenient solves the problem. Budget time for the paperwork itself: the application has to carry an affidavit from a competent, disinterested adult attesting to your age and eligibility, so line that person up before you travel, and confirm current fees, hours and ID rules with the recorder's office directly. Travel is the other thing worth spelling out on the invitation: Des Moines International is small and most guests will connect through Chicago or Minneapolis, while Dubuque sits nearly three hours from Des Moines and is genuinely easier to reach from Chicago or Madison than from anywhere in Iowa.
- When to marry — September and early October are the dependable weeks — humidity gone, dry air, color coming in at the vineyards — with late May and June the spring alternative if you can live with real thunderstorm risk.
- What it costs — The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden publishes wedding packages from $3,000 outdoors and $3,750 indoors, with ceremony-only bookings from $1,000, which is a fair marker for a mid-range Iowa venue — the caveat being that hotel ballrooms and historic estates usually quote a smaller room fee against a per-head food and beverage minimum, so the rental number alone tells you very little about the final bill.
Once the venue is settled, the next thing most couples deal with is telling everyone. A digital wedding invitation carries the address, a map, your timings and a live RSVP on one link — which matters more than usual when guests are travelling to Iowa and need directions, and plenty of notice.
