Bonanza farms were the industrial-scale wheat operations that opened the Red River Valley in the 1870s and 1880s, and this is one of the last of them still standing — a National Historic Landmark rather than a barn dressed up to look like one. Planning a wedding in North Dakota

A marriage license here is issued by a county recorder — the county where either of you lives, where a parent lives, or where the ceremony will be held, which is what makes the state simple for out-of-state couples — and it must be issued no more than sixty days before the wedding date, so applying months ahead is the common mistake. State law allows a marriage to be solemnized anywhere in North Dakota and requires two witnesses to sign the certificate; the statutory charge is a license fee of up to $30 plus a $35 supplemental fee. Do we have to live in North Dakota to get married here?

No. A license can be issued by the recorder in the county where the ceremony will be held, as well as in a county where either of you or a parent lives, so out-of-state couples simply apply where they are marrying. Is a North Dakota ceremony legally binding for a couple travelling from abroad?

Saturdays between June and mid-September are the contested ones, and the market is small enough that one popular room in Fargo or Bismarck can absorb most of a summer on its own. Seasonal venues tighten it further — the Lewis & Clark Riverboat runs only from Memorial Day to Labor Day, which is roughly fifteen weekends of supply. Treat a year out as normal rather than early for a named summer Saturday, and reserve lodging blocks at the same time in Medora and Devils Lake, where the room count is genuinely finite.

How late in the year can we hold the ceremony outdoors?

Late May to late September is the honest answer. North Dakota winters bring subzero temperatures, open-prairie wind and blizzards that close interstates, and even in the shoulder months it is wind rather than rain that wrecks an unsheltered ceremony. Venues such as the Fargo Air Museum, the Gorecki Alumni Center and the Heritage Center are set up to hold ceremony and reception entirely indoors, which is why a large share of weddings in the state never plan an outdoor component at all.
