Göttingen weddings usually come in two halves: the registrar marries you in the Altes Rathaus on the market square — in the Dornse, the medieval council chamber, which holds 25 — and the party happens elsewhere. Building started around 1270 at the southern end and finished about a century later with the crenellated northern block; the loggia across the front went up between 1402 and 1404. The council moved out in 1978, and the upper floors have been given over to ceremonies, exhibitions and events ever since — the great hall, restored in the 1880s, carries murals by Hermann Schaper showing Hanseatic city arms and scenes from the town's own history. Marriages happen in the Dornse, the council chamber on the west side that was heated from beneath the floor when the aldermen used it, and it takes 25 people, so this is the ceremony rather than the reception. The Gänseliesel fountain stands directly outside, which settles the question of where the photographs get taken.

This was the railway's locomotive repair shop, an industrial monument now well over a hundred years old, and it holds 9,400 square metres of hireable space across three halls — the largest alone runs to 5,400 m² — with a further 6,000 m² outdoors. A wedding takes a fraction of that, partitioned off, and what it gets is brickwork, roof trusses and a rigged lighting and sound system instead of a hotel ballroom. The site sits immediately beside the ICE station, which for a guest list arriving from Hamburg, Berlin or Frankfurt is the entire argument, and two hotels of 144 rooms each stand on the same ground. Catering is brought in, so the menu is your decision rather than the building's.

Five minutes from the market square, this is a courtyard room roofed with a large glass dome, with garden space alongside it and room for 199 people. The kitchen is the part worth knowing about before you enquire: it works vegetarian and vegan first and puts meat back on request, which is unusual at this size and either exactly what you want or exactly what you don't. Drinks are sold as a package from €8 per person per hour. The house owns its PA, DJ kit, microphones and livestream rig, so the technical side does not need a separate supplier and a relative watching from abroad is a solved problem.

What you hire here is the whole building and the whole garden, with nobody else in either: a 300 m² hall, a 160 m² winter garden and 250 m² of garden outside. Sixty to 120 sit down comfortably; ninety to 180 works if the food is standing. Beckmann's top-floor room looks straight down the valley the town sits in, and the 115 m² roof terrace attached to it — lounge seating, its own bar — is the reason people book it rather than the room itself. Albrecht von Haller laid out the university's first garden in 1736 as a medicinal plot inside the town wall, and among the glasshouses standing in it now is an Orangerie the university lets to outside organisers by arrangement. Eighty people sit down at tables, around 120 come to a standing reception, and roughly 130 fit if the evening is a concert or a reading. The constraint is the calendar — it is let only from the middle of June to the middle of September. Enquiries go to the garden's technical director rather than an events office, and catering, furniture and drinks are all yours to arrange, which keeps the cost down and the workload up.

The Kiessee is Göttingen's lake — a flooded gravel pit just south of the centre — and the sports club sitting on it rents out its clubhouse in the hours nobody is training. About a hundred fit in the main hall with a second room for thirty; tables, chairs, crockery and cutlery come with the room, and a covered terrace faces the water. No caterer is imposed, which is why this one circulates between couples by word of mouth rather than appearing in directories. Fifteen kilometres out of Göttingen at Gleichen, the von Uslar-Gleichen family still runs this estate — farm, forestry and lettings — and hires out two rooms from it that could hardly be less alike. The barn is what most couples come for: roughly 400 m² beneath an open timber roof, loft-like rather than rustic, with a bar, a dishwasher and a large drinks fridge already installed. Inside the house, a part-double-height hall floored in marble leads through to a mirrored salon, which is the formal alternative when the weather stops cooperating. Göttingen's registry office will not take a booking more than six months ahead: both the date reservation and the binding registration open exactly six months before the day, which is shorter than many German cities allow, so couples routinely hold a venue for a year before the ceremony date is actually secured. Ceremonies in the Altes Rathaus run on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays plus the second Saturday of each month only, the room seats 25, and Friday afternoons and Saturdays carry a surcharge. Two of the best rooms in town exist only in summer — the pavilion on the Schillerwiesen is used from 1 June to 30 September, and the university lets the Orangerie in the old botanical garden from mid-June to mid-September.

Can we hold the legal ceremony at our wedding venue in Göttingen?

Not inside the city. Göttingen's Standesamt performs marriages in the Neues Rathaus, in the Altes Rathaus and, from 1 June to 30 September, at the pavilion on the Schillerwiesen — there is no scheme sending a registrar out to hotels and private venues the way some larger German cities run one. Only a registrar can marry you in Germany; a church service or a celebrant-led ceremony carries no legal weight on its own. If having everything under one roof matters more than staying in the city, look just outside it: Schloss Berlepsch at Witzenhausen is a branch office of the Witzenhausen registry, and Rittergut Besenhausen is one of Friedland's.

We don't live in Germany. What paperwork do we need to marry in Göttingen?

The marriage has to be registered before it can take place, and if neither of you lives in Göttingen you file that registration with the registry office where you do live, which forwards it. Foreign documents must be produced in certified translation by a court-sworn translator, and anyone whose home country's law applies is normally asked for a certificate of no impediment — an Ehefähigkeitszeugnis; where a country does not issue one, you apply to the president of the responsible Oberlandesgericht for an exemption, and that review runs to weeks rather than days. The German civil ceremony is the marriage, so you do not need to repeat it at home, though you will usually have to register it with your own authorities afterwards. Allow several months from first contact, and note that Göttingen will not let you reserve the date more than six months out.
