You can, but only a German registrar can perform the marriage: a celebrant ceremony on the Oberburg Giebichenstein or anywhere else has no legal force on its own, so it either follows a civil ceremony or is purely symbolic. The eligibility check at Standesamt Halle costs €80, or €130 where a foreign legal system has to be taken into account, and each foreign partner normally has to produce an Ehefähigkeitszeugnis — a certificate of no impediment — from their home authorities, along with a valid passport or ID, a certified copy of the birth register and a registration certificate, translated by a sworn translator. If your country does not issue such a certificate, the registry office applies on your behalf to the president of the responsible Oberlandesgericht for an exemption, and that takes weeks, not days. Halle's own guidance is that anyone with a foreign nationality or born abroad should come in for a consultation rather than rely on a document checklist, because the requirements change by country of origin.

Reserve the date with the registry office as early as you like — Halle will hold a slot and, if you live elsewhere, your home Standesamt forwards the application on. What you cannot do early is the registration itself: the Anmeldung der Eheschließung is only possible from six months before the day, and once made it is valid for exactly six months, so the wedding has to fall inside that window. The licensed rooms then run on narrow rotas that eat into what is left: the Moritzburg Talamt only on the third Saturday of the month, the Händel-Haus Renaissance-Zimmer on the first Friday and Saturday from March to October, the Krug zum grünen Kranze on the third Friday from April to October, and the Bohlenstube on a single date each year. Private venues such as the Volkspark or the DORMERO take bookings much further out, so fix the party venue when you find it and treat the registry slot as the piece to work backwards from.

The registry side is cheap and published: €80 for the eligibility check, €130 if a foreign legal system applies, and a €150 supplement for any ceremony on a Saturday or on a Friday from noon onwards. On top sits a room charge that ranges from nothing at all in the Ratshof to €50 at the Stadthaus or the Hausmannstürme, €120 for the Händel-Haus Renaissance-Zimmer, €210 at the Krug zum grünen Kranze, €220 for the Bohlenstube, €250 at the Moritzburg, and €8.50 per guest with a €225 minimum at the planetarium. A celebrant on the Oberburg is €300 through AtelierF or €500 with your own speaker. The reception is where the money actually goes: venues quote hire and catering separately, and the per-head food and drink bill is what your final figure hangs on.

In Halle itself, rarely. The rooms the registrar visits are small — 35 at the Stadthaus, 25 at the Moritzburg and the Händel-Haus, about 30 at the Krug zum grünen Kranze, 50 at the planetarium, 10 in the Ratshof and just six in the Hausmannstürme — so most couples marry in one place and eat in another, which the compact old town makes easy enough. The exception worth knowing about is Gutshof Hädicke at Teicha, where Standesamt Petersberg rather than Standesamt Halle marries couples in the hall or the garden pavilion and the party simply stays put. The Krug zum grünen Kranze comes closest inside the city: the ceremony room and a house that seats 200 indoors share an address, though the ceremony itself is capped at 30. A third route is to marry quietly in the Ratshof on a Monday or Wednesday, when there is no room charge and no weekend supplement, and treat a celebrant-led ceremony at your reception venue as the occasion everyone is actually invited to.
