The 10 best wedding venues in Hanover

Hanover's weddings divide between the baroque end of the city and the industrial one. The Galerie Herrenhausen seats 450 under frescoes finished in 1698 and the Hardenbergsches Haus lets out its rooms one at a time across the road, while the Cavallo riding hall off Dragonerstraße and the Werkhof's converted factory floor in the Nordstadt take the parties that want brick and tall windows; on the water there is Pier 51, glazed on every side at the edge of the Maschsee. The legal ceremony is a separate errand here, because the city registry marries couples in the Gartensaal of the New Town Hall, in the Wilhelm Busch museum's garden and on a solar boat on the lake, each on its own short list of published dates. Electress Sophie's gallery went up between 1694 and 1698 and has barely been altered since: one long hall painted by the Venetian Tommaso Giusti with scenes from the Aeneid, under a ceiling of interlaced grey-blue ribbon ornament. It takes 450 at a seated dinner or 700 at a standing reception, opens directly onto the Great Garden, and borrows the cloakrooms of the Arne Jacobsen foyer next door. The registry also marries couples in the building's Frühlingszimmer on a handful of summer Saturdays, but that room is capped at 18 people, so most couples use the Galerie for the party and settle the paperwork elsewhere.

A further 630 square metres of usable ground outside carries the drinks reception or a free-form ceremony. The house works between 70 and 170 guests and is step-free and level throughout. Its own furniture stock runs to 200 Arne Jacobsen chairs, twelve loft bar tables with stools and twelve bistro tables.

A factory from the end of the 19th century supplies the raw material: the Hävemeier & Sander hall keeps its full-height factory windows, a gallery and a parquet floor across roughly 330 square metres, and holds up to 250. The foyer alongside takes 120 for the arrival drinks and a planted courtyard joins the two, so a shower does not end the evening. The restaurant on site does the catering, and the Werkhof's own three-star-superior hotel, entered from Kniestraße on the far side of the same complex, has 39 rooms.

Put exclusive use, the hour of your sitting and the question of where a band is meant to stand at the top of the first enquiry.

There are 146 rooms and 15 suites upstairs, so the block booking and the party sit inside one building.

The museum of caricature and drawing occupies the Georgenpalais in the Georgengarten, the English landscape park running between the city and Herrenhausen, and the registry uses it two ways: indoors for 24 people on selected Saturdays from May to September, and outside for 50 on Fridays through the summer, with the interior room held back in case of rain. The Wallmodencafé is on the premises for coffee afterwards. East of the city in Sehnde, this estate has been divided into halls that each carry their own name — the Marggrafsaal, the Rittersaal, the Kutschersaal and a Kornspeicher converted out of the grain store — so the size of the party picks the room instead of the other way round. Numbers run from ten to five hundred, and the Gutshofpark behind, pond included, takes the free-form ceremony. The estate also brews on site: the Gutshofbrauerei has been running since 2016, a Broyhan among the house styles, and the Gutshofgarten grows vegetables that reach the menus in season.

Hülsede's four wings were raised between 1529 and 1548, early Weser Renaissance work standing in its own moat in the valley between the Deister and Süntel ridges south-west of Hanover, and the same family has held it for more than four hundred years. Four halls, the vaulted cellar and the original castle kitchen are all in use; the ceremony goes outdoors in the castle park or on the jetty, with the tithe barn as the wet-weather room, and the courtyard and vault take the reception drinks. A suite in the castle covers the night that follows and doubles as the getting-ready room. Guests will need cars or a hired coach — this is genuine countryside rather than a suburb with a nice name.

Everything legal runs through the Standesamt, and Hanover publishes its outstation dates a year ahead — the 2026 list for the Galeriegebäude in Herrenhausen came out in November 2025 — with a hard headcount on each room that counts the couple and the witnesses: 18 at Herrenhausen, 30 at the Old Town Hall, 29 on the Maschsee solar boat, 70 in the Gartensaal. Photographs in the Herrenhäuser Gärten are not a free extra either; the couple, the photographer and every guest buy a garden admission ticket at the normal rate. Time the date around the fairground as much as the weather, since trade-fair weeks, the Schützenfest at the start of July and the Maschseefest in late summer are when central hotel rooms turn scarce and expensive.

Can we marry in Hanover if we don't live in Germany?

Yes, but only a German registry office can perform the marriage — no venue, church or celebrant makes it legal. Couples with no German address give notice at the Standesamt where the ceremony will take place, and foreign nationals normally need a certificate of no impediment (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis) from their home authorities, or, where their country does not issue one, an exemption from the president of the higher regional court in Celle. That paperwork takes weeks to months, so most foreign couples complete the civil marriage at home first and hold a freie Trauung — a non-binding ceremony led by a celebrant — at their Hanover venue, which local venues arrange all the time.

What does a wedding in Hanover actually cost?

The civil ceremony is the only part with published prices: the registry fee starts at €75, a Saturday adds €130, and room hire at the special locations runs from €180 plus VAT for the Gartensaal to €451.84 plus VAT for the Galeriegebäude in Herrenhausen and €700 for the historic tram, with most of the outstations charging a further €100 handling fee. Everything after that is quoted per date and headcount, and the same room costs materially more on a Saturday in June than a Friday in March. Ask early whether the caterer is fixed — the Werkhof cooks in-house and the Herrenhausen buildings are catered by Grauwinkels — because that decides whether you are comparing hire fees or whole evenings.

How far ahead do we need to book?

Roughly a year for a Saturday between May and September; the venues local couples want first, Cavallo, the Werkhof and Gutshof Rethmar among them, fill earliest. The registry's special locations are tighter still, because they are not open diaries but fixed lists — the Galeriegebäude in Herrenhausen had nine Saturdays in 2026 and the museum garden five Fridays, published the November before. Secure the ceremony slot before you commit to a reception date, not after, or you will find yourself moving the party to fit the registrar.

How many guests can come to the civil ceremony itself?

Fewer than most couples expect, and the caps include the two of you and your witnesses. The Frühlingszimmer at Herrenhausen holds 18, the Zoo's Hoflokal 25, the Maschsee solar boat 29 and the Old Town Hall 30; only the Gartensaal at 70 and a Leibniz University lecture theatre at 150 take a real crowd. When the guest list outgrows the room, the standard Hanover answer is a small registry ceremony in the morning followed by a freie Trauung at the reception venue, where the numbers are the venue's to set rather than the city's.
