An inn has carried this name since 1412, though not on this site: the building stood in the Aeschenvorstadt until a road widening in 1964, when it was taken apart, every piece numbered, and reassembled in 1973 and 1974 on the Rhine bank in St. Alban-Tal. Painted ceiling medallions and panelling that had been hidden behind a late-Gothic façade came to light during the dismantling and went back in. Couples choose between the Sternensaal at 40 to 100, a vaulted cellar for 80, and the Hofgarten, which takes up to 200 in summer; the Rhine terrace handles drinks, and the St. Alban ferry crosses at the foot of the garden.

Basel-Stadt licenses only two rooms for a binding civil ceremony — the Trausaal on the ground floor at Rittergasse 11, which admits 40 guests with 23 seats and runs about fifteen minutes, and the Bürgergemeinderatssaal at the Stadthaus, capped at 60 and available only on the first and third Friday afternoons of the month. Basel-Landschaft is looser: the Spiegelzimmer at Schloss Bottmingen is licensed for ceremonies roughly once a month, though it holds twenty people and is booked through the registry office in Arlesheim rather than through the castle. Keep guests away from the third week of June if they are flying in — Art Basel runs 18 to 21 June 2026 with previews from the 16th, and hotel rooms across the region are taken and priced accordingly.

Can we marry legally in Basel if neither of us lives in Switzerland?

If one of you does live in the canton, the dates, the venue and the preparation file are all started online through the Basel-Stadt registry office.

Where does the civil ceremony actually take place?

In Basel-Stadt there are two rooms and no others. The Trausaal on the ground floor of the registry office at Rittergasse 11, near the Münster, seats 23 and admits 40 in total, with ceremonies on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings plus some Friday afternoons and selected Saturdays; the base fee is CHF 325. The Bürgergemeinderatssaal at the Stadthaus on Stadthausgasse takes 60, runs twenty minutes and is offered only on the first and third Friday afternoons of the month, for an additional venue charge. Everything else in this guide — castle, church, harbour hall — is the celebration, held before or after.
