The 10 best wedding venues in Dübendorf

Couples in Dübendorf marry at the Waldmannsburg, a 1932 restaurant on the Dübelstein hill with the Glattal below it, in the converted mill rooms of the Obere Mühle on the Glatt, or at the Sorell Hotel Sonnental on Zürichstrasse. Built in 1932 in the hamlet of Dübelstein, the house is named for Hans Waldmann, who held the castle on the ridge behind it between 1487 and 1489, and its terrace looks straight down the Glattal. Five rooms are let separately: the ten-seat Salon under a gilt leaf frieze, the Veranda-Flügel, the Waldmanns-Stube, the Garten-Saal with its Arthur Gautschi wall painting and a piano, and the Palais, which is the wedding room proper — ceremony in the Cheminéezimmer, drinks on the Schlossterrasse or in the Schlossgarten, dinner in the Festsaal for 30 to 50. The Aegerters have been running the house since the mid-1980s, Fabian Aegerter taking over from his parents in January 2017; the kitchen handles every plate itself, since outside caterers are not allowed in.

The town bought the failing mill in 1962 and, after the barn burned in 1978, a committee of local artists talked it into becoming Dübendorf's cultural centre; it opened as one in May 1990. Rudolf Wuhrmann put up the present mill building in 1821 and the water wheel followed thirteen years later — it is still there, and the house still generates some of its own electricity. Rooms go one at a time: the Senfmühle, one of the original outbuildings, is 60 square metres and seats forty-five; the attic hall with its adjoining room is 100 square metres, eighty at laid tables or as many as 160 in a lighter set-up; the Speicher opened in October 2023. Take the whole 800 square metres and you have 290 seated or 299 standing. There is a kitchen on site and the KulturBar in the house, but you are free to bring in whichever caterer you want.

This is the practical choice, and the only address in town that can bed the whole guest list: 101 rooms on Zürichstrasse, a short hop from the airport and from central Zurich. Largest of five function rooms is the Honig Arvensaal at 125 square metres, seating up to 120, with the two Arve rooms taking 40 to 50 for a rehearsal dinner or a next-morning brunch. The SOL restaurant opens onto a broad terrace and a garden with a playground, which counts for more than it sounds when a third of the party is under ten.

The main Trauzimmer was renovated in 2020, holds forty-five and is reached step-free through the door to the left of the main entrance, the one lettered trau dich. Slots are spaced 45 minutes apart — Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, Thursday and Friday mornings and afternoons — and every one of them, here or at an outside room, is reserved through the registry's own form rather than the venue. A thirteenth-century church that belonged to a house of the Order of St Lazarus, whose lay brothers ran a hospital for people with leprosy; it has stood under federal heritage protection since 1961 for its significance to the country as a whole. An arson fire in 1956 came close to destroying it, and what you see is the 1961–63 restoration under Linus Birchler and Walter Drack: a rectangular Romanesque nave, a narrower square chancel, three small round-arched windows in the north wall and the main portal in the west front. The Klosterstube next door — restored in 1988 along with a Romanesque cellar found underneath it — takes the gathering afterwards. Both are let by the town, and you book them through the town office, not a caterer.

Matthias and Bettina Brunner-Schill keep this inn in the old centre of Wangen, square on the Dorfplatz. Its Badstube dining room is a vault that was the village bath house before it spent years as a coal cellar; the earliest trace of it is a line in a 1594 chronicle about a wolf at Wangen that went for the bath-keeper's wife. The Tanzsaal is the celebration room and its whole point is that it subdivides, so it works at ten guests and at 150, and there are bedrooms upstairs for the ones who should not drive. It is an official Traulokal of the city of Dübendorf, which means the signing, the dinner and the beds are all in one house.

A tavern has stood at this crossroads since roughly 1400; the Zurich country house you see today went up in 1733 as the Gasthaus zur Linde and only became a Doktorhaus in 1858, when the physician Bernhard Schlatter bought it — two more doctors followed him, and the name stuck. The town let it decay, voters rejected a restoration in 1967, and a co-operative formed to rescue it; the restaurant reopened in 1976 and Christian Haller has run it since January 2016. Weddings take the Winde, 128 square metres under the old timber frame, thirty to eighty at round tables or long ones, with the Familiensaal at 57 square metres for 35 and the Riedenerstube for 20. Dübendorf's registry licenses the house, so the ceremony can happen here too.

For centuries the residence of the bailiffs Zurich sent out to govern the district, the castle now belongs to a foundation and stands inside the little walled Städtli by the harbour at the north end of the lake. Rooms are picked by character, not floor area, and none is large — the Sodbrunnenraum around the old draw-well at 33 square metres, the vaulted Schlossgewölbe, the Landvogtstube and Jägerstube, or the whole third floor, whose main room is 84 square metres. Civil ceremonies do happen here, in the Landvogtstube, but the registry is Volketswil's rather than Dübendorf's, so that date gets booked in a different office from everything else on this list. Hire is by the block of hours, cheaper in winter, and the garden comes with the castle from May to mid-October. The station is a good two kilometres out from the Städtli, so plan the transfer.

Water is the entire argument here: the house sits on the Greifensee shore at Maur and it is the nearest properly waterfront option to Dübendorf. It divides into the Seerestaurant, a rustic Landbeiz and a terrace over the water, together taking up to 140, and the Remimag kitchen runs the whole catering itself rather than farming it out. The place is step-free throughout. Two things to plan around: Maur has no railway station at all, so guests need the bus or cars, and dogs are welcome in the Landbeiz but not in the Seerestaurant, which matters more than you would think at a family wedding.

The industrial-scale answer, and relevant only if the guest list has run away with itself. The main HALL is 2,000 square metres of column-free floor and will seat 1,030 at banquet tables; that is a conference hall with a telescopic grandstand and a hydraulic stage, not a wedding room. The LOFT above it is the part to look at — 488 square metres, warm gold, tall windows, its own terrace, and a folding wall that halves it. Laid for a banquet the LOFT takes 360, for a gala 250, and 660 standing. Everything here is built and staffed for corporate work, so budget for a planner and for bringing in your own look, but nothing else in Dübendorf will seat three hundred people at dinner.

Planning a wedding in Dübendorf

The Zivilstandsamt Dübendorf releases only seven Saturday ceremony dates a year and holds all of them at the Stadthaus, so a Saturday signing is the scarcest thing on the whole list; weekday slots run Tuesday to Friday in 45-minute blocks and can be reserved provisionally twelve months out, but are only confirmed once the preparatory procedure closes. Every room has to be booked through the registry itself, not the venue. Marrying in one of the licensed outside rooms adds CHF 100 for the registrar's journey, and the room the registrar signs in is fixed in advance — at the Waldmannsburg it is the Cheminéezimmer, with the apéro moving outdoors afterwards rather than the vows. Getting to Dübendorf from the city takes about twelve minutes by train; getting around it is the harder part, since the Waldmannsburg sits up in the Dübelstein hamlet on the slope above town, so guests will want cars or a shuttle.

The registry runs a preparatory procedure first, and your date is only confirmed once that closes, so start it well before you book anything else; if you live abroad it normally begins through the Swiss representation where you are. The ceremony is held in German, with a CHF 50 surcharge to conduct it in another Swiss national language, and if either partner or a witness cannot follow it you must bring an interpreter registered with the Obergericht, which costs about CHF 300 including travel and is paid by you on the day. Two witnesses over eighteen must attend with original passports or identity cards.

How far ahead do we need to book, and can we marry on a Saturday?

Saturdays are the constraint. The Dübendorf registry sets only seven Saturday dates a year and holds them exclusively at the Stadthaus, in slots between 09.00 and 12.45 — in 2026 those fall on 2 April, 9 May, 6 June, 11 July, 8 August, 12 September and 24 October, and in 2027 on 24 April, 22 May, 12 June, 10 July, 28 August, 25 September and 30 October. Weekday ceremonies are far easier: Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, Thursday and Friday mornings and afternoons, in 45-minute blocks. You can reserve a date provisionally no earlier than twelve months out, so the sensible sequence is to hold the registry slot the day it becomes available and let the reception venue follow, rather than the other way round.

What does a wedding in Dübendorf cost?

The civil formalities are cheap by Swiss standards — CHF 75 for a weekday ceremony, CHF 150 on a Saturday, plus CHF 100 if the registrar has to travel to a licensed outside room such as the Waldmannsburg or the Gasthof Sternen. The reception is where the money is. Most of the town's character venues are small: the Waldmannsburg's Palais is built for 30 to 50, the Doktorhaus tops out at 80, the Sorell Hotel Sonnental at 120 and the Schifflände at Maur at 140, and Schloss Greifensee's rooms are smaller still. At 150 you are down to the Gasthof Sternen's Tanzsaal, which subdivides and is quoted from ten guests up to exactly 150, or the Obere Mühle, which takes 290 seated across the whole house. Past that there is one option left, THE HALL, where the LOFT banquets 360 and the main hall 1,030. If your number is anywhere near 150, book early — the Sternen and the Obere Mühle are the two rooms every large local wedding is chasing, and the Sternen has to be reserved through the registry as well if you want the ceremony there.
