First recorded in 1213, Hallegg stands on an east-facing slope north-west of the city; the Welzer family bought it in 1535 and spent the century turning a fortification into a residence, Moritz Welzer in 1546 and Viktor Welzer in 1576. The arcaded courtyard is the reason to come: an irregular pentagon, two storeys of arcading beneath sgraffito dated 1547 carrying the arms of the Welzer and Khevenhüller families, and it doubles as the open-air ceremony space. The registry office licenses two rooms here — the small hall and the Rittersaal — while the chapel of St Francis in the north-east corner, first mentioned in 1616, covers church ceremonies. It remains the Helmigk family's private house rather than a full-time events business, so this is working countryside instead of manicured grounds and enquiries go by telephone or email.

Wolfgang III Mager von Fuchsstatt raised a Renaissance moated castle here in 1590; Thomas von Moro had it rebuilt into the present block in 1845, to plans by Peter Rudolfi. The Carinthian hunters' association bought the property on 27 April 1967 and ran it as a Jägerhof, which is why part of the surrounding park is still a game enclosure — guests walk past the deer on the way in. Ground floor and terrace operate as a restaurant, the upper rooms are let for celebrations, and the registry office counts Mageregg among its licensed addresses, so the vows happen on the premises. A sensible choice for couples who want a castle and a park without paying the lakeside premium.

Cistercians founded Viktring in 1142 and consecrated the church in 1202; the abbey was dissolved in 1786, spent the 19th century as a cloth and loden works, and has housed a music-focused secondary school since 1977. What couples actually book is the arcaded courtyard of that school building, where the Klagenfurt registrar is licensed to marry you, with the abbey church beside it for a religious service and the old fishponds and parkland behind for photographs. Treat it as a ceremony setting rather than a full venue — dinner goes elsewhere — and check the calendar early, because the Arkadenhof also serves as a stage for the Musikforum concert series through the summer.

On a sun-facing slope in the northern reach of the municipality, Sem Kegley — a Texan who spent 32 years in Viennese music publishing before turning to wine — planted the first vineyard at Karnburg in 1995 and had made Carinthia's first Qualitätswein by 1998. He farms it now with Georg Lexer, whose grandfather's land the current parcels grew out of from 2005; the cellar begun in 2008 was finished in 2012. The estate runs three things at once — a winery, a restaurant cooking at a serious level and a Stadtheuriger — and raises a good deal of what it serves, down to the free-range pork. The city's registry office lists it under the older name, Weingut Karnburg, and a registrar will marry you here. One unusually practical detail for guests without cars: ÖBB sells a single booking covering the train and the transfer up to the estate — book it under "Auf der Leiten".

DS Thalia, a screw steamer of 1909 and the last one in Austria, is licensed for 300 and is the boat couples ask for; MS Klagenfurt and MS Kärnten are the modern alternatives and MS Velden the least expensive. The two-hour minimum is charged from the home port, with a supplement if you board further up the lake at Pörtschach, Maria Wörth or Velden, and the route is drawn to keep you on the stretch of water belonging to whichever municipality's registrar is marrying you. Schleppe has brewed in eastern Klagenfurt for centuries, and its event hall is built directly into the working brewery. It runs to roughly 1,030 square metres across three linked levels — 447, 156 and 300 square metres — and what sells the room is the brewery's copper Sudkessel standing in it. Seating is laid out to whatever plan you bring, and the food can come either from the brewery's own kitchen or from a caterer you appoint yourself, in which case the venue adds €2 a head. Behind the hall, the open-air arena takes up to 3,200 if the guest list outgrows the building. One caveat that separates it from every other address here: Schleppe is not on the registry office's licensed list, so it can host the party but not the vows.

Only a ceremony conducted by a registrar is legally binding in Austria, and Klagenfurt's registry office at Kumpfgasse 20 licenses exactly ten addresses for one: its own two halls, Schloss Hallegg, Schloss Mageregg, Schloss Maria Loretto, the Seepark Wörthersee Resort, Stift Viktring, Weingut Karnburg, Hotel Sandwirth and a ship of the Wörthersee fleet. Marrying at any of those outside addresses costs €503.80 for two Austrian citizens or €629.20 where one partner holds a foreign passport, against €85.75 and €216.60 inside the registry rooms — so choosing the venue also chooses the fee. The paperwork runs on its own clock: the Ehe-Ermittlungsverfahren needs both of you present, cannot be opened more than six months before the date and lapses after six, while summer Saturdays at the lakeside houses are taken a year or more ahead.

Late May, June and September are the reliable months, with terraces open and the water still warm enough to matter; August is peak lake tourism along the whole Wörthersee shore, so you compete with holidaymakers for rooms, staff and road space. Winter dates cost noticeably less, but the lakeside houses show themselves at their weakest once the terraces close.
