The 10 best wedding venues in Bochum

Bochum splits the job in two: the legally binding ceremony happens in one of the rooms the city registry office has approved, and the party happens somewhere else. That is why couples end up at the Kuppelsaal of the Zeiss Planetarium or the KUBUS set inside the bombed shell of Haus Weitmar for the vows, then move on to Rittergut Haus Laer, the moated Haus Kemnade on the Ruhr, or the Festscheune am Ümminger See for dinner. Gut Mausbeck and Borgböhmer's Waldesruh cover the same ground on the northern and southern edges of the city, in an 18th-century farmhouse and a rebuilt forest inn respectively. Almost nothing here is a purpose-built wedding hall — the stock is old industry, old farms and university buildings put to a second use.

The house calls itself the oldest surviving secular building in the middle Ruhr region, with origins reaching back to 940 — three centuries older than Cologne Cathedral — though the first written record is dated 1 May 1243. One family has held it since 1480, the Freiherren von der Leithen–Frielinghaus, and they still live on site and let the rooms themselves rather than through an agency. Metre-thick walls with gun ports and a surviving stretch of Gräfte split the site into fore-castle and main castle, and the medieval keep still stands on its original oak piles. Three halls take the party — Kavalierssaal at 200, Großer Festsaal at about 100, Rittersaal at about 80 — with suites, rooms and apartments behind them, so the guest list sleeps where it dined. Public tours run the last Friday of each month at 9am for €10, which is a cheap way to walk the halls before committing to one.

A flood in 1486 moved the Ruhr and left this moated house stranded on the far bank; the boundary reform of 1970 put it inside Hattingen, yet the City of Bochum has owned it since paying 3.5 million marks for it in 1921. What stands today is largely the 1602–1704 rebuilding in Ruhr sandstone after a fire, and the Rittersaal upstairs carries a moulded stucco ceiling and a Renaissance armorial fireplace, seating 25 to 80. Larger parties take the Partyscheune, a former agricultural barn that holds 80 to 150 at round tables or 150 to 200 at rectangular ones, with the Burghof courtyard added on request. Sharing the house are a musical-instrument collection of some 1,800 pieces and a display of East Asian art, which is worth knowing when you plan the timings: the site works as a museum by day and is yours in the evening.

A barn with a light-filled winter garden grafted onto it, about 400 square metres in total and working comfortably from 60 up to 120. The free ceremony happens on the open ground in front of the barn, with the lake a few steps further on, which keeps the drinks reception outdoors until everyone moves in to eat. Stolzenhoff Catering run the place, so the kitchen, the bar, the sound system already installed in the room and the white Chiavari chairs arrive on a single contract instead of five. Worth noting for access: two free car parks, plus an accessible toilet and changing facilities on site.

The half-timbered farmhouse at the centre of the estate dates from 1714 and was rebuilt after a fire under heritage supervision, so the restaurant rooms keep their original proportions. Jürgen Löring cooks there — classical technique with a Westphalian lean — and the same kitchen feeds the Festscheune next door, a climate-controlled barn with a fireplace, a concert grand and its own sound system. Everything is on one level with no internal steps and an accessible lavatory, which is unusual for a converted barn and worth knowing if guests use wheelchairs. It takes about 80 seated and does not really work below 30, and the house is closed Mondays and Tuesdays except by arrangement.

Johann Henrich Borgböhmer and Wilhelmina Letzner started the farm in 1819 and sold refreshments to people walking the Weitmar woods; the licence to serve alcohol followed in 1888. An arsonist burned the place down in 2010 and it was rebuilt in a Mediterranean style and reopened in 2011, so the business is two centuries old and the fabric is fifteen years old. Eight rooms are let separately and scale almost continuously — Kamin-Lounge 25, Bel Étage 30, Bernsteinstube 35 or 40, Smaragd Salon 40, Belvédère 50, Bellevue 60, Borgis 80 — with a stated range of 20 to 200 across the house and a panoramic terrace wrapping the outside. This is the family-restaurant end of the market, not the design end; the draw is that a guest list of any size finds a room that fits it without renting more space than it needs.

This listed shed once housed the blowing engines that forced air into the Bochum ironworks, and the restoration left the raw walls alone while replacing one end with a full-height glass front, so the ceremony room looks straight out over the works site. Fifty chairs fit, with standing room behind, which is more than most of the city's registry rooms manage. Book it and you also get the Jahrhunderthalle itself on the doorstep for photographs — brick, steel trusses and the Westpark beyond. The catch is scheduling: the registry office holds no ceremonies here from May to September, so this is an autumn, winter and early-spring venue only.

The registrar comes to the planetarium rather than the other way round, and only ever on a Friday at 13:00 — the dome is lit as a night sky for the vows, and a fifteen-minute show made for weddings runs immediately afterwards. €400 covers exclusive use of the dome and the show; the registry office adds €200 for working outside its normal hours, and the planetarium's friends' association will lay on sparkling wine on request. Roughly 260 seats means a guest list most churches could not take. There is no dinner space attached, so treat this as the ceremony and book the reception elsewhere.

An air raid on 13 May 1943 gutted Haus Weitmar, a manor built in 1592, and left only the outer walls standing. In May 2010 a plain concrete cube was opened inside that shell to hold the Situation Kunst collection, and the ceremony room is one of its quietest spaces — white walls and daylight, wrapped in burnt Renaissance masonry. Fifty seats and thirty standing places. In good weather the registrar will instead marry you outdoors in front of the ruined Sylvesterkapelle, a chapel first documented in 1397. The surrounding park is also a sculpture park, with work by Richard Serra and Dan Flavin among trees that pre-date the ruin.

A listed half-timbered house that the university kept when the concrete campus went up around it, now run as a conference and function venue with a modern fit-out behind the old frame. The ceremony room is genuinely small — 25 seated, 35 standing — so this is for immediate family rather than the full list. What justifies it is the neighbour: the university's botanical garden is directly alongside, and couples routinely walk the party straight into it afterwards. Transport is the other argument for it — the U35 reaches the campus from Bochum Hauptbahnhof in about ten minutes, and nobody has to hunt for a parking space.

A listed house on Gudrunstraße belonging to the Gesellschaft Harmonie, a Bochum reading-and-citizens' society founded in 1817 that marked its 200th year in June 2017. Two ceremony rooms are offered, one seating 20 and one seating 40 with ten standing, and you pick between them at the pre-wedding consultation. The booking is exclusive for the hour — no second couple is scheduled in behind you, which is not true of every room on the city's list — and in fine weather the registrar will marry you in the garden instead. Its other advantage is that the reception need not move: the in-house restaurant is open to non-members, individual rooms hold 10 to 100, and the whole house combines up to 200.

Planning a wedding in Bochum

The civil ceremony must be conducted by a Standesamt, and Bochum keeps a fixed list of roughly nineteen approved rooms — the historic Rathaus, the Zeiss Planetarium dome, a BOGESTRA heritage tram and the Vonovia Ruhrstadion among them — reservable through the city's Traukalender up to twelve months ahead, though the registration itself can only be filed in the six months before the date. Check the Traukalender listing before you set your heart on a room: the historic Rathaus has been flagged there as under renovation. Two further quirks catch people out — the Dampfgebläsehaus at the Jahrhunderthalle takes no ceremonies at all between May and September, and Haus Kemnade, though owned by the City of Bochum, sits across the river inside Hattingen's boundary and so is not on Bochum's list at all. Ceremonies scheduled outside the registry office's normal opening hours carry a surcharge on top of the venue fee, which is how the planetarium's Friday slot ends up costing an extra €200. The city is also wide: Wattenscheid in the west and Langendreer in the east are the better part of twenty kilometres apart, so pick a ceremony room near the reception rather than trusting guests to cross town in an hour.

Can a couple living outside Germany legally marry in Bochum?

Yes, but only in front of a Standesamt — in Germany a religious or free ceremony has no legal effect whatsoever, so it cannot stand in for the civil one. If neither partner lives in Germany you file the Anmeldung der Eheschließung with the registry office where the ceremony will take place, which for these venues means Bochum. Most foreign nationals must produce an Ehefähigkeitszeugnis, a certificate of no impediment from their own authorities; where a country does not issue one, you apply for an exemption to the President of the Oberlandesgericht Hamm, and that process takes months. Plenty of couples avoid the whole thing by marrying legally at home first and holding a free ceremony at a Bochum venue.

How far in advance should we book?

The city's Traukalender opens dates about twelve months ahead, and that is when the scarce slots go — Saturdays, and the planetarium's single Friday 13:00 ceremony each week. The legal registration is a separate step and can only be filed in the six months before the wedding, after which it stays valid for exactly six months.
