Planning a wedding in Recklinghausen
Only a registrar can create a marriage in Germany, and Recklinghausen's rota is narrow: the Trauzimmer and the Kaminzimmer both sit Wednesdays from 2 to 3pm and Thursdays and Fridays from 9am to 12.30pm, plus a handful of named Saturdays in the Kaminzimmer between 9.30 and 12.30. Those Saturday dates are published two years ahead and a good half of them already read ausgebucht. The Fördermaschinenhaus, the Trainingsbergwerk and the Parkhotel Engelsburg take ceremonies only Monday to Wednesday at 2pm. Registry fees stack — €40 for the marriage itself, €66 where either partner is a foreign national, a further €100 for a Saturday or for any room outside the town hall, and from €150 for the Kaminzimmer — and each off-site venue bills its own room fee on top of that. The Ruhrfestspielhaus, normally the fifth licensed room, is currently listed as closed for renovation work. Plan around the Ruhrfestspiele as well: the festival runs from 1 May to mid-June every year and puts its big tent in the Stadtgarten.
- When to marry — May to September is the working season, when the Engelsburg terrace, the Vest Arena's Auszeit garden and the Stadtgarten are usable, though the Ruhrfestspiele claim the first six weeks of it and the Stadthafen reverses the rule entirely by taking weddings only from October to March.
- What it costs — The registry side is cheap and published in writing — €40 for the ceremony, €66 if one of you holds a foreign passport, €100 more for a Saturday or an off-site room, and from €150 for the town-hall Kaminzimmer. The two mining venues charge their own fee on top: the registry office lists €350 for each, while the Trainingsbergwerk's own site quotes €300, so settle which figure applies before you budget. None of that touches the reception, which every venue here quotes per head after a site visit rather than from a tariff.
Once the venue is settled, the next thing most couples deal with is telling everyone. A digital wedding invitation carries the address, a map, your timings and a live RSVP on one link — which matters more than usual when guests are travelling to Recklinghausen and need directions, and plenty of notice.
