Most Split weddings happen on the Marjan side of the city, where Villa Dalmacija and the Meštrović Gallery stand a few hundred metres apart above the water. Restaurants take much of the rest: Restaurant Adriatic on the Sustipan cliffs and Dvor on the cliff above Firule beach both take private celebrations outdoors, and the Sustipan headland between them is a public park the city rents out by guest count for the ceremony itself. Inside the Roman walls the options are older and much smaller — the Ethnographic Museum lets its palace courtyard and a 43-square-metre medieval church. Guest lists that outgrow the centre move to Hotel Park beside Bačvice, or eight kilometres down the coast to Le Méridien Lav at Podstrana.

Tito's Split residence, still owned by the city, which means the hire contract is signed with the City of Split rather than an operator. Ivan Meštrović designed this house for himself between 1931 and 1939 as a summer residence, studio and exhibition space; it opened as a museum in 1952 and the sculpture collection is still installed inside and across the grounds. Ceremonies and receptions both use the courtyard. The conditions are worth knowing before you fall for the place: 150 guests is the ceiling, amplified music stops at 11pm, the courtyard's two bathrooms only cover you to 60 guests and you rent portable units above that, and a security guard goes on the bill to watch the artworks. Hire is hourly at €350, so a six-hour ceremony lands near €2,100 and a full day nearer €6,300.

The museum occupies the Božićević/Natalis palace just off the Peristyle and rents two of its spaces for ceremonies. The courtyard is 75 square metres, seats about 70, and has a Renaissance wellhead carved with the family coat of arms at its centre. The alternative is the church of St Andrew de Fenestris — 43 square metres, so genuinely small, and the museum points couples to it for intimate ceremonies. Either runs €500 to €1,000 for up to four hours. Neither comes with a kitchen or the room for a dinner, so this is the ceremony half of a two-venue day, with the reception booked somewhere you can walk to. The setting is residential rather than touristic: this is the stretch of coast where Split goes swimming, well south of the old-town crush, and the outdoor patio is relaxed enough to be dog-friendly. No event capacity is published — what the restaurant offers is its outdoor private area for a celebration, so establish early how much of it you can hold, since that decides both the cost and whether other diners are around you.

Split's oldest hotel opened in 1921 beside Bačvice, the shallow sandy bay where the city plays picigin, and has been renovated without losing the period interiors. Weddings run to about 150 across the terrace, which faces the islands, and the rooms inside. The curfew is the reason to shortlist it: the terrace shuts down at 11pm like everywhere else, but the indoor celebration has no cut-off at all, which is close to unheard of in Croatia. Guests sleep upstairs at group rates and the couple's room is complimentary. Budget around €145 a head for food, and expect Dalmatian cooking alongside the international menu.

Eight kilometres south of the city along the Podstrana shore, this resort puts two ballrooms at a wedding — the Meštrović is 520 square metres with a good source of daylight — and between them they take more than 250, which is useful when you want the ceremony and the dinner physically apart. A guest list beyond that moves into the 770-square-metre Grand Dalmacija, rated to 800 theatre-style; the hotel's own figure for a gala dinner is 400. Outdoors you have the infinity pool and the Grand Dalmacija terrace, both quoted on request rather than listed. Less a venue than a park the city lets you use for a fee scaled to your guest numbers — roughly €400 for fifty people. The headland closing the south-west corner of Split harbour is planted with tall pines and ends in cliffs, and ceremonies take place either at the small stone gazebo with its ring of columns or in the shade at the cliff edge. There is no kitchen and no shelter, so this is the ceremony only; the usual pattern is to marry here and walk a few minutes to Restaurant Adriatic, or drive into town for dinner. The ground served as Split's city cemetery through the 19th century before the graves were cleared and moved.

The nearest working vineyard that takes weddings is not in Split at all: Kairos sits on Babe hill at Plano in the Trogir–Kaštela wine district, roughly half an hour west of the city and close to the airport. Thirteen hectares hold about 100,000 vines farmed organically — a third Crljenak, the Dalmatian grape genetically identified as Zinfandel, a third Plavac Mali, and a third split between Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Tempranillo. Two formats are offered, a micro wedding of up to 25 or a full one up to 150, and the winery closes to the public either way. Nothing is cooked on site — a Split caterer arrives with everything and pairs it to the Kairos wines.

The registry office (matični ured) expects to hear from you at least three months before the date, with the full document set — birth certificate and certificate of no impediment, each under three months old, apostilled and translated by a sworn court interpreter — lodged roughly 30 days out. Anything inside Diocletian's Palace is a walk-in job: the whole quarter is bollarded against traffic, so there is no coach drop-off and guests cross a few hundred metres of polished Roman limestone from the Riva. Curfews vary more than couples expect and decide where the late half of the night happens — the Meštrović Gallery cuts music at 11pm and Hotel Park's terrace at the same hour, but Hotel Park's indoor rooms carry no curfew at all and Villa Dalmacija runs to 2am. Settle that before you sign anything.

Can we marry legally in Split as non-residents, or do we need a civil ceremony at home first?

You do not need a ceremony at home. A marriage conducted by a Croatian registrar is a full legal marriage and is recognised abroad on the strength of the Croatian certificate. Contact the Split registry office (matični ured) at least three months before the date; each of you needs a birth certificate and a certificate of no impediment, neither more than three months old, apostilled and translated into Croatian by a sworn court interpreter, plus passports and the details of two witnesses, with the file submitted around 30 days ahead. A Catholic — or other state-recognised religious — ceremony also carries civil effect, provided you obtain the registrar's certificate beforehand and the church forwards the paperwork afterwards. Requirements differ by nationality, so confirm the exact list with the Split office rather than a general guide.

What does a wedding in Split actually cost?

Venue hire spans roughly €1,000 to €8,000, driven mostly by how historic the building is. Movement is the part couples underestimate: Diocletian's Palace and the streets around it are closed to vehicles by bollards, so no coach or car reaches a venue inside the walls and guests walk in from the Riva across worn limestone. The airport is 25 km west at Kaštela, a 30 to 40 minute drive, and if any of the party is arriving from Brač, Hvar or Šolta the summer catamarans book up well in advance.
