The 10 best wedding venues in Rome

Roman weddings split between the hills that ring the centre and the countryside an hour outside it. In the city couples book the panoramic villas — Villa Miani on Monte Mario, Villa Aurelia on the Janiculum, Casina Valadier inside Villa Borghese — or a palace such as Palazzo Brancaccio by the Colosseum, while the hotel route runs through the Ritz ballroom at the St Regis and the terraced garden at Hotel de Russie. Further out are Castello Odescalchi above Lake Bracciano, the seafront Posta Vecchia at Palo Laziale, and the moated Castello di Tor Crescenza off the Via Cassia. Almost none of these are places guests sleep, so a Roman wedding is normally built around a central hotel block plus transport out to the venue.

Built in the late nineteenth century on the crown of Monte Mario, the highest hill in Rome, Villa Miani puts the dome of St Peter's almost directly on axis with its terrace. Behind that view sit roughly 3,000 square metres of neoclassical rooms in frescoed plaster and marble, the largest of which, the Salone delle Feste, seats 550 — so a winter reception moves indoors without losing the address. The trade-off is the climb: the villa is well above the centre and has its own car park, which helps with coaches and rules out anyone walking home.

Cardinal Girolamo Farnese commissioned this villa in 1650 at the top of the Janiculum, and it has been in the hands of the American Academy in Rome since the early twentieth century. Couples take the noble floor — Galleria, Music Room and Dining Room running into one another — plus three walled gardens: a formal Italian one, a lemon garden, and a smaller enclosed garden that works well for drinks. There are no bedrooms on site and only a symbolic ceremony is possible here, so it suits a party already staying in Trastevere or the centre, ten minutes down the hill.

Giuseppe Valadier completed this cubic, Ionic-colonnaded pavilion on the Pincio in 1837, and it is one of very few buildings inside Villa Borghese that can be hired privately. Three linked terraces on the first floor — Aurora, Belvedere and Tramonto — read right across the skyline from St Peter's to Monte Mario, while the rooms inside keep their restored Pompeian-style frescoes, and a walled garden of about 2,500 square metres sits alongside. Numbers are the real constraint at 120 seated, which points it at a centro storico wedding where most guests arrive on foot or by taxi from a nearby hotel.

The Brancaccio-Field family finished this palace in 1880, the last one the Roman aristocracy built, on the Oppian Hill between the Colosseum and Santa Maria Maggiore and directly above Nero's Domus Aurea. Its Salone di Gala seats 350 beneath frescoed ceilings and gilding, with a series of smaller halls — Sala degli Angeli, Sala degli Arazzi, Sala Rossa — taking about 150 each for a ceremony or a dinner split across rooms. Four thousand square metres of mature garden absorb the rest, which is how the site reaches 800 for a standing reception without feeling crowded.

Near Piazza della Repubblica, the 1894 Grand Hotel — now the St Regis — keeps a Belle Époque ballroom, the Ritz, at 276 square metres under original frescoes and chandeliers, seating 312 or taking 450 standing. Four smaller rooms run from the 30-cover Diocleziano up to the 108-cover Danieli, which covers the rehearsal dinner and the morning-after lunch without moving anyone. The argument for it is a whole weekend kept under one roof in the centre — guest rooms upstairs, nothing to transfer anybody between.

Sitting between Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps, the de Russie is unusual for that address in having real private green: the terraced Secret Garden climbs the slope behind the building in tiers of clipped hedge and citrus. Receptions use the garden with the tall salon that opens onto it through floor-to-ceiling windows, so the dinner can shift inside without the party losing its setting. Guest numbers here are modest by Roman standards, which makes it a fit for a smaller city wedding where everyone stays in the hotel and walks to dinner.

A converted works building at the foot of the Monte Mario park, Officine Farneto trades frescoes for brick, six-metre ceilings and iron-framed factory glazing across about 1,100 square metres. Movable panelling scales the room from roughly 80 guests to 660 seated, and there is a 170-square-metre roof garden over the reserve plus a glass-roofed veranda that can hold the ceremony if it rains. For couples who want Rome without gilding — or for a guest list a listed villa simply cannot seat — this is the obvious answer, and it is only one booking a day.

Still inside the city boundary off the Via Cassia, Tor Crescenza is a private castle the Crescenzi family have held since the early 1400s, raised around an eleventh-century watchtower. The approach crosses a moat into a crenellated first courtyard, with a second arcaded cloister behind it; when the weather turns, the Limonaia glass pavilion over the citrus garden and a 140-square-metre glazed terrace carry the dinner. A handful of bedrooms let the couple and immediate family sleep on site, and the centre is twenty minutes away — unusual for a castle wedding anywhere.

Forty kilometres north of the city, the Odescalchi fortress stands over the volcanic lake at Bracciano: a fifteenth-century Renaissance residence with a walled courtyard, frescoed halls and ramparts looking down on the water. It has been the best-known castle near Rome since Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes married here, and between interiors and grounds it will absorb a thousand people, though the smaller rooms handle a party of sixty just as well. A consecrated church sits directly below the castle, so Catholic couples can hold the ceremony and the reception on one site.

Paul Getty bought this seventeenth-century Orsini villa on the Tyrrhenian shore in 1960 and furnished it with Renaissance pieces that are still in the rooms; the Roman mosaics uncovered beneath the floors during his restoration are displayed in a small museum in the basement. Run now by the Pellicano group with twenty-one rooms and suites, it takes a wedding of about 160 with the sea on one side and the Odescalchi castle at Palo on the other. Two constraints to note — the hotel is seasonal, opening roughly late March to early November, and it is a forty-minute drive from Rome.

Planning a wedding in Rome

A legally binding marriage in Italy is performed by a comune registrar in a room the municipality has authorised — in Rome that means the Campidoglio and a short list of civic properties — so the ceremony held at a villa or castle is almost always symbolic, staged either side of the civil one. Moving guests to a centro storico venue is its own problem: the ZTL restricts driving through the historic centre during posted hours and coaches need a permit, which is why a hotel within walking distance of the venue beats cheaper rooms across the river. Plan around August as well, because Rome empties for Ferragosto in mid-month and florists, caterers and much of the restaurant trade shut for two or three weeks.

When to marry — Late April to mid-June, then the second half of September through October, are the workable windows — mild days, long evening light, and none of the 35°C afternoons that make an open-air July or August ceremony punishing in formalwear.

Can a foreign couple marry legally in Rome, or do we need a civil ceremony at home first?

Non-residents can marry legally in Italy, and no separate civil ceremony in your home country is required — an Italian civil marriage is valid and recognised abroad. The paperwork runs through your embassy or consulate in Italy, which issues a nulla osta declaring nothing bars the marriage; that document then has to be legalised by the Prefettura before Rome's registrar will accept it. Allow several weeks, bring passports and birth certificates with any required translations, and expect a divorce decree or death certificate to be asked for if either partner was married before.

Where does the legally binding ceremony actually take place in Rome?

Civil marriages are conducted by a Roma Capitale registrar in a room the comune has authorised, the Campidoglio being the well-known one, and those slots are booked with the municipality rather than through your venue. A villa, palace or castle can host a symbolic or religious ceremony but not the civil one unless the property itself is on the approved list — which is why most couples sign the register on a weekday and celebrate at the venue separately. Catholic couples marrying in a Roman church go through their home parish and the local diocese, a slower process worth starting six to twelve months out.

How far ahead do Rome venues need to be booked?

Saturdays from May to mid-June and across late September are the pressure points, and the named villas take those dates twelve to eighteen months ahead, along with the better caterers and florists. Midweek is materially easier and often cheaper, and it costs guests little here — flights into Fiumicino and Ciampino are frequent and most people extend the trip anyway. If a particular venue matters more than a particular date, ask what it has left in April, October or midweek before fixing anything else.

How many guests can a Rome venue realistically hold?

The central properties are the tightest, because they sit in protected parks and listed buildings: Casina Valadier seats around 120 and Villa Aurelia around 200. Past 300 the field narrows to Palazzo Brancaccio's garden, the Salone delle Feste at Villa Miani, the Ritz ballroom at the St Regis, or Officine Farneto, which seats 660. Beyond roughly 400 you are effectively choosing the countryside — Castello Odescalchi at Bracciano can take a thousand across the castle and its grounds.
