Planning a wedding in Schwerin
Schwerin's ceremony rooms run on fixed rotas rather than on demand — the castle library opens only October to June, on one set Friday a month at 11am, noon or 1pm; the Goldener Saal marries on Fridays; and the boat ceremony is a Friday 11am slot between May and September, with other weekdays only on request — and the city adds a flat €120 to any Saturday. Notice of marriage cannot be given more than six months ahead, but a date can be held with the registry office long before that, so in practice the landmark rooms are spoken for well over a year out. The other date to plan around is the Schlossfestspiele, which runs 28 May to 19 July in 2026, puts an open-air stage on the Alter Garten directly opposite the castle and takes a large share of the city's hotel beds while it does; pressure around the Schlossinsel has risen further since the Residence Ensemble was inscribed by UNESCO on 27 July 2024.
- When to marry — June is the strongest month — highs around 21°C and the longest days of the year, landing just before July's rainfall peak of roughly 83mm, and inside the May-to-September window when the castle Orangerie, the lake boats and the zoo's Afrikalodge are all open at once.
- What it costs — Ceremony-room hire is published and cheap by German standards — €85 for the Alter Ratssaal, €150 for the Schleswig-Holstein-Haus garden salon (€250 to marry in its garden), €220 for the Goldener Saal, €235.50 for the planetarium, €250 for the Schleifmühle, €290 for the castle library and €640–€750 to marry aboard a Weiße Flotte boat, plus €120 for a Saturday and administrative fees on top — but the reception is where the budget actually goes, and only a few venues publish a figure at all, the Strandpavillon's all-in rate of about €109 a head being the useful benchmark.
Once the venue is settled, the next thing most couples deal with is telling everyone. A digital wedding invitation carries the address, a map, your timings and a live RSVP on one link — which matters more than usual when guests are travelling to Schwerin and need directions, and plenty of notice.
