Adjoining rooms — the Oculus Dome, the Gallery, the 1875 Bar — absorb the ceremony and drinks, and the whole place is unapologetically ornate, which suits some guest lists and not others.

Working fireplaces in every space make winter dates workable, and covered valet parking exists for the simple reason that Red Hook is not somewhere guests arrive by subway.

Nineteenth-century varnish works, then the Albra Metal Foundry, then an abandoned shell full of dead vehicles until the Du Val family bought it in 1980 and started hosting events in 2001. What they kept is about 3,000 square feet of raw brick interior plus an indoor greenhouse, a planted courtyard and a roof terrace aimed at the Manhattan skyline — the greenhouse being the reason photographers steer couples here. It is the last foundry still standing in that stretch of Long Island City, with the old company logo still legible on the corner of the building.

Guests then move through a lounge built around a 15-foot Carrara marble bar under a white tin ceiling. Outside caterers are allowed; drinks are not — the in-house bar program is exclusive, and a day-of coordinator is a contractual requirement.

Transport is the other quiet line item — Red Hook has no subway station of its own, and venues there and at Industry City expect shuttles, valet or car services rather than guests finding their own way.

Most price against a food-and-beverage minimum that shifts with the day of the week and the season — the Central Park Boathouse and the New York Botanical Garden both run catering in-house and quote per event, while 501 Union sets its rate by date and holds it with a signed contract, a 50 percent venue deposit and a refundable $1,000 security deposit. Budget separately for what the contract requires rather than suggests: certificates of insurance from every vendor, a mandatory day-of coordinator at some venues, and an in-house bar program you cannot substitute. Always ask for the all-in number at your real guest count, because the headline figure rarely includes staffing, rentals or tax.

When is the best time of year to marry in New York City?

Late April to June and September to mid-October are the two windows almost everyone competes for, and they are also the only months when the city's outdoor space is reliably usable — the Wythe Hotel's terrace is an April-to-November proposition and its roof bar closes after October. July and August are humid enough that a tented or open-air reception becomes a gamble, though harbor-front rooms like the Liberty Warehouse catch a breeze the inland venues do not. January through March is where the availability and the negotiating room sit, and venues with working fireplaces or enclosed halls carry a winter date perfectly well.

Can a couple from outside the United States legally marry in New York City?

Yes — New York imposes no residency or citizenship requirement. Both people apply together for the license at a City Clerk office, which now runs by appointment only through the city's Project Cupid system, and state law prohibits the ceremony from taking place within 24 hours of the license being issued; the license then remains valid for 60 days and only within New York State. Unlike Italy or France, there is no separate civil ceremony to arrange — the wedding you hold in New York is the legal marriage. To have it recognized at home, order a certified copy from the City Clerk afterwards (New York City marriage records are held by the city, not the state) and get it apostilled if your country is party to the Hague Convention.

How far ahead do venues book, and how big can a New York wedding be?

Saturdays in the spring and fall windows commonly go a year or more ahead at the better-known rooms, and hotel blocks in Manhattan deserve attention at the same time as the venue rather than after it. On scale, the Plaza's Grand Ballroom is the ceiling among the venues here at 500 seated, the Liberty Warehouse takes 400 and Weylin's rotunda 300 — dropping to 200 once a dance floor is in — while 501 Union and Brooklyn Grange sit nearer 150 to 200 and the Stone Mill caps at 120. Above roughly 300 guests the shortlist gets very short very quickly, so treat guest count as the first filter rather than the last.
