Planning a wedding in Cambridge
Book the registrar separately from the venue, through Cambridgeshire County Council's registration service — a date a venue is holding for you means nothing until a registrar is confirmed against it. Check the county's approved-venues list before you fall for a room: fourteen colleges are on it, but King's, Westminster College and the Museum of Technology are not, so a wedding at any of those three means marrying somewhere else first. College availability is the constraint people underestimate — these are working institutions running to the University calendar, so dates concentrate in the vacations, and each licensed college sets its own rule on whether couples without a membership or alumni connection can book at all. For guests, assume no parking: the centre is tightly restricted by bus gates and the Park & Ride sites on the edge of the city are the realistic way to move a wedding party in and out.
- When to marry — May to September is the window worth competing for: it is when the walled gardens, lawns and river terraces these venues are built around are actually usable, and it overlaps the University's long vacation, when college space is easiest to get.
- What it costs — Per-head package pricing is the honest yardstick here, and the larger venues publish it: the University Arms runs from £135 a head with a 60-guest minimum up to £185 a head with a minimum of 80, and King's lists £190 a head excluding VAT for its classic package, with a minimum of 100 to 120 guests depending on the day. Below that tier you are hiring a room and buying catering separately — from about £1,500 at Swavesey Windmill, from around £450 for the whole Museum of Technology site. The registrar's fee sits on top of all of it.
Once the venue is settled, the next thing most couples deal with is telling everyone. A digital wedding invitation carries the address, a map, your timings and a live RSVP on one link — which matters more than usual when guests are travelling to Cambridge and need directions, and plenty of notice.
