Cotswold weddings sort into three kinds of property. There are the historic estates — Sudeley Castle at Winchcombe, the Victorian state rooms of Westonbirt House near Tetbury, and the Indian-style house at Sezincote outside Moreton-in-Marsh. There are converted farm buildings, of which Stone Barn near Northleach and the fifteenth-century barns at Caswell House are the best known. Katherine Parr died here in 1548 and lies in St Mary's under a neo-Gothic tomb George Gilbert Scott designed for her in 1863 — no other venue in the region has a Tudor queen on site. Because the chapel is consecrated it takes blessings for up to 130 rather than legal ceremonies, so the civil wedding happens in the Castle Library, which holds 50 among the antiques and old books, or in the Old Coach House at 100. Dinner is in the Orangery, glazed to the floor and seating 150, with a marquee on the North Lawn as the option when the list outgrows it. The Queen's Garden outside is a Victorian rebuild of an Elizabethan parterre, walled in yew planted in 1860 and now carrying more than eighty varieties of rose.

Lewis Vulliamy built this neo-Elizabethan house for Robert Stayner Holford between 1863 and 1870, at a cost that made it one of the most expensive of the Victorian era, and the interiors were designed to be looked at rather than lived in. The Great Hall licenses 200 for a ceremony and seats 150 at long tables or 120 on rounds; the Library takes 120 for a ceremony and 80 to dine, the Reading Room 75 and 90. Holford spent decades on the planting — he began the arboretum next door in 1829 — and the formal Italian Gardens are where summer ceremonies go. Hire is exclusive, so the state rooms and the 210 acres are yours for the day rather than shared with a second party.

Built in 1805 as a deliberate hybrid of Hindu and Mughal forms, Sezincote puts an onion dome, minarets and a long curved orangery into Cotswold stone; the Prince Regent came in 1807 and what he saw fed straight into Brighton Pavilion. Ceremonies are held in that orangery, which takes 220 and opens through French windows, or in the dining room at 70 over the Persian garden, with dinner in a clear-sided marquee on the lawns and the house lit behind it. Humphry Repton had a hand in the landscape and the water gardens have run much the same way since the mid-nineteenth century — spring-fed pools linked by running water, a temple, bridges. The season is the real constraint: mid-May to mid-September, nine weddings a year.

Anyone researching this one will find it under its old name, Barnsley House, and the garden is why: Rosemary Verey moved in during 1951 and spent decades turning it into one of the most studied private gardens in England, which survived the rebrand intact. Three spaces carry the licence — the Restaurant for a full ceremony of 110, then the Temple at 7 and the gothic summer house at 6, the pair couples use when the ceremony itself happens outdoors in the planting and only the signing needs a roof. The kitchen works off the walled garden, so what appears at the wedding breakfast is set by what is ready that week.

A fourteenth-century tithe barn sits at the centre of the hotel, and the conversion left the stone walls and the height of the roof alone. The Loft above it is the main licensed room at 100, with the Shed at 80, the Drawing Room at 20 and the Pit at 10, so a ten-person ceremony and a hundred-person party can run on the same site without either being wedged into the wrong space. Around it are 220 acres, a courtyard of lime trees, old stables and a spa — couples generally land on Calcot because they are planning two or three days rather than one afternoon.

When the list breaks 200 and the barns start declining, this is where it goes: seven rooms hold civil-ceremony licences and the hotel works from two guests up to five hundred. The Kingfisher Suite is the principal one, floor-to-ceiling glass onto the lake with a terrace off it, and the Whimbrel marquee joins onto it when both are wanted; the Starling Suite covers smaller numbers on the same water. It stands among the Water Park's old gravel workings, now more than 150 lakes, five miles out of Cirencester and twenty minutes from J15 of the M4 and J11a of the M5 — nothing else on this list is as easy to reach.

Rather than force a party into a listed room, the estate put up a separate reception building from rammed earth and timber off its own land and soundproofed it, which lifts the noise curfew that shapes the evening at most rural venues; it holds 250. Ceremonies stay in the house — the Hall is licensed for 150 seated, the Drawing Room for 59 and the Morning Room for 37, with fifteen bedrooms above and the front steps usable for an outdoor vow. Thirteenth-century Elmore church is under a mile off for religious services, and the estate sits west of the Cotswold escarpment near the Severn, so the approach is flat and quick instead of a crawl up single-track hill lanes.

Cripps restored this as the working agricultural building it was instead of smoothing it into an event space, so the adjoining Dutch barns kept their corrugated iron roofs rather than being tidied away, and the fireplace is wide enough to stand inside. Ceremonies run indoors or outside under a wooden shelter, both to 200, with 200 dining and 250 once evening guests arrive. Underfloor heating and a Funktion-One rig make a winter date genuinely workable, the licence runs to 1am, and there are fire pits in the yard with pasture on every side.

Caswell goes back to 1485, and the restoration of the barns kept the original Cotswold stonework while putting the services a modern wedding needs in behind it. Being on the Oxfordshire side near Burford, it is a shorter run from London and Heathrow than most of the Gloucestershire properties.

A civil ceremony has to happen at premises approved by the local registration authority, and since April 2022 it can be held fully outdoors — but only within the approved venue's own grounds, and the venue must clear the exact spot with the superintendent registrar beforehand. Consecrated chapels are the reverse case: Sudeley's St Mary's was built around 1460 and takes blessings, not legal ceremonies. Beyond the paperwork, the region's real constraint is beds — villages like Barnsley and Lower Slaughter have very few, so venues with accommodation included solve a problem the others hand back to you, and single-track lanes plus weekend tourist traffic make journey times longer than a map suggests.

Can a couple from overseas legally marry in the Cotswolds?

Yes — unlike several popular destinations, England and Wales will marry non-residents, and the marriage is legally binding, so no separate civil ceremony at home is required. The catch is the timetable: both partners must be physically resident somewhere in England or Wales for seven full days before giving notice, notice must be given in person at the register office covering where you are staying, and the marriage cannot take place until 28 days after that. If either of you is a non-UK national, the Home Office can extend the wait to 70 days. Because that means two trips or a very long first one, many overseas couples complete the legal paperwork at home and hold a celebrant-led ceremony at the Cotswold venue instead.

How much does a Cotswolds wedding venue cost?

Hire alone spans roughly £4,000 to £28,000. Converted barns typically sit between £5,000 and £9,000, while manor houses and country-house hotels run £12,000 to £22,000, and the best-known estates go past that. None of those figures include catering, drinks, or accommodation. The variable that moves the number most is the date: a Saturday between June and September commands a premium, and October and November hire fees are commonly a quarter to a third lower for the same property.

How far ahead do we need to book?

Sixteen to twenty months is the realistic window for a peak-season Saturday at a well-regarded venue, and the scarcest properties are worse — Sezincote holds nine weddings a year inside a season that runs mid-May to mid-September, and Sudeley releases only a limited number of dates. Weekdays, Fridays and Sundays open up considerably, as does anything from October onwards. If a specific house matters more than a specific date, ask the venue what it has free before you commit to a date with anyone else.

Can we hold the ceremony outdoors?

Legally, yes. Since April 2022 civil ceremonies in England and Wales may take place fully outdoors, with no requirement for a permanent structure overhead, provided the spot lies within the grounds of approved premises and the venue has agreed the location with the superintendent registrar in advance. Religious ceremonies are the exception and generally still must happen inside a place of worship. Practically, every venue will hold an indoor room in reserve, because a settled outdoor day in this part of England is never something to plan around without a fallback.
