Evening wedding invitations for your evening guests

Updated October 2026Written by the Wedvite founders

An evening wedding invitation asks guests to the celebration after the wedding breakfast, so it gives an arrival time and a finish time instead of a ceremony time. Sent digitally, it is its own link in the day invitation's design, or the same invitation with the evening listed. Guests reply on the page; Wedvite costs £49 an invitation, once.

What you get

What an evening invitation needs, and gets

Arrival and finish times

Rows you name and time yourself, such as evening reception from 7.30pm and carriages at midnight, so evening guests see their own hours.

Replies with a headcount

Evening guests answer on the page, with dietary needs if the evening food calls for them, and the total is ready for the caterer.

Party size per reply

Cap how many people one reply can include, from 1 to 50. The cap is the same for every reply on an invitation, so an evening invitation can carry its own.

One invitation for everyone, or two invitations?

On Wedvite every link to an invitation shows the same page, and nothing on it can hide the ceremony from someone invited only to the evening. So if day and evening guests share one invitation, evening guests will see the whole day's timings, which some couples are happy with and others would rather avoid.

That leaves two honest set-ups. One invitation for everyone works when you do not mind evening guests seeing the ceremony time, and costs £49 once. Two invitations, a day one and an evening one in the same design, give each list only its own times and keep the two headcounts apart, which helps when the evening food is ordered separately. Each of the two is published and paid for on its own, and each has its own reply cap, so the evening one can allow a family of four while the day one stays at two.

What should an evening wedding invitation say?

Name the hosts as you do on the day invitation, then invite the guest to the evening celebration, or evening reception, of your marriage. Give an arrival time and a finish time, the venue, and what the evening holds: a buffet, a band, the first dance. Add the dress code if it differs from the day's, and a reply-by date, because the evening food is still counted. The evening section of our UK digital wedding invitations guide and our wording page, both linked below, carry the fuller rules and worked examples.

Leave out the ceremony time unless evening guests are welcome at it.

✦Say evening celebration or evening reception, not reception alone
✦Give an arrival time and a finish or carriages time
✦Say what the evening includes: food, music, the first dance
✦Use the same reply-by date as the day invitation
✦Do not explain why the invitation is for the evening only
✦Send it at the same time as the day invitations

When should evening invitations go out?

At the same time as the day invitations, in the same design. Day invitations usually go out six to eight weeks before the wedding, nearer three months for a wedding abroad, and the evening ones should travel with them. Sending the evening invitations a few weeks later tells guests they were a second wave, and in a family WhatsApp group that is noticed quickly. If you add someone to the evening list later, they simply get the same link as everyone else.

Digitally, sending together is easy: both links go out the same evening from your phone, and you watch the replies arrive on each. Set the same reply-by date on both, so the caterer gets one final number for the day and one for the evening at the same time. There is nothing to print, no postage to wait for, and a change of finish time reaches every evening guest at once.

How do evening guests reply, and what does the caterer need?

Evening guests reply on the invitation itself: yes or no, how many are coming, their names, and any dietary needs if you switch that question on. The options cover vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free, nut and shellfish allergies, halal and kosher, and you can add a box for anything else. Replies arrive in a live headcount you can export as a spreadsheet for the venue, so nobody is counting texts the week before.

With a separate evening invitation, its replies are counted on their own, which is usually what the caterer wants: the evening food is ordered for the evening total plus the day guests who stay. With one invitation for everyone, the count is a single list, so tell the caterer yourself how many of those guests are evening only. Either way, the reply-by date is what keeps the final numbers honest.

FAQ

The questions everyone asks.

What is the difference between a day and an evening wedding invitation?+

A day invitation asks guests to the ceremony, the drinks reception and the wedding breakfast. An evening invitation asks them to the celebration afterwards, so it gives an arrival time and a finish time and says what the evening holds, such as food, music and dancing.

Can one digital invitation serve day and evening guests?+

Yes, if you are happy for evening guests to see the whole day's timings. Every guest sees the same page. For separate timings, send a second invitation in the same design.

How much does a digital evening invitation cost?+

£49 once, in pounds, for unlimited guests. A separate evening invitation sent alongside the day one is published and paid for on its own. There is no postage and no per-guest fee, and you can share it with your first 10 guests before paying.

Should the evening invitation mention the ceremony?+

Only if evening guests are welcome at it. Some couples invite everyone to the church or register office and to the evening, and limit only the wedding breakfast; then say so. Otherwise give the evening times alone and do not explain why.

When do evening guests need to reply?+

By the same date as day guests. The caterer still needs an evening number for the buffet or the late food, and one deadline for both lists means the final figures arrive together rather than a week apart.

Can we send evening invitations on WhatsApp?+

Yes. You paste the link into WhatsApp or a text from your own phone, and the chat shows your envelope as the preview. Guests open it in the browser and reply on the page, with nothing to install.

One link. Every guest.

Design it free, share it with your first 10 guests, then pay £49 once for unlimited guests — RSVP, envelope and WhatsApp delivery included.
