In practice, no. French law requires the civil marriage to be celebrated at the town hall, in a room open to the public, in a commune where one of you — or one of your parents — is domiciled or has lived continuously for at least a month before the banns are published. That excludes a château lawn as a legal venue and excludes non-resident couples almost everywhere in Provence. The standard route is to complete the legal marriage at home first, then hold a symbolic ceremony here, which every estate on this page is set up to host. May and June, then September into mid-October, give low-to-mid-twenties days without high summer's mid-thirties afternoons, and they fall outside the window when some estates close for events altogether. The mistral is the variable people underestimate: a cold, dry north-westerly running down the Rhône valley, most persistent around Avignon and the Vaucluse and much gentler in the Var and at Cassis. It turns up on bright, cloudless days and can sit for a couple of days at a time, so settle the wind plan and the indoor fallback with the venue when you sign, not the week of.

Peak-season Saturdays at the better-known estates are typically taken twelve to eighteen months out, and the strong local florists and caterers go at the same time. The binding constraint is almost never the seating — it is beds. Villa Baulieu will seat 350 outdoors but sleeps 24; Domaine de Fontenille takes 120 outdoors across 25 rooms; Hôtel Crillon le Brave caps the whole event at 70. Work out where the overflow sleeps and how they get back there after midnight, in a region with effectively no rural taxi coverage, before you commit to a venue.

Few of these estates publish prices, and those that quote do so per event rather than per head, so like-for-like comparison is hard from the outside. Three things move the figure most: whether you are buying exclusive use of the entire property or hiring a single room, how many nights the venue insists on — Domaine de Fontenille will not privatise for fewer than two — and whether accommodation for the guest list sits inside the quote or is booked separately in the nearest town. Ask every venue to break the number into hire, catering, accommodation and outside-supplier access, because what is bundled varies far more between Provençal estates than the headline quotes suggest.
