Planning a wedding in Pittsburgh
Allegheny County is the outlier among Pennsylvania counties: marriage licenses are issued by the Department of Court Records' Marriage License Office in the City-County Building at 414 Grant Street, not by the Register of Wills. Both parties apply together, and the office holds the license for a mandatory three days before issuing it, so a fly-in weekend has to be built around that gap rather than around the venue's availability — the county's own advice is to apply two to three weeks ahead. The other thing outsiders underestimate is the terrain: venues sit on opposite banks of two rivers and over a ridge, and the Fort Pitt and Liberty tunnels back up badly on Friday afternoons and before Steelers and Pitt home games, so plan shuttles around bridges rather than map distance. Mount Washington is reachable by the Duquesne and Monongahela inclines as well as by road, which makes a Station Square to Grandview Avenue guest transfer easier than it looks.
- When to marry — May, June, September and October are the dependable months: July and August bring river-valley humidity, and from December through March ice on the hills and bridges makes guest travel to hilltop venues genuinely unreliable. Note that the county-run Hartwood Acres properties only rent from May through October at all.
- What it costs — Local budget data puts Pittsburgh's ceremony-and-reception venue spend around $21,000 to $26,000 for roughly 175 guests — close to 40 percent of a total that averages in the high $30,000s — but the per-head spread inside that is wide enough to move the whole number. LeMont quotes a 2026 wedding package at $109 a person with food and bar included; the Heinz History Center's exclusive caterer works out at $170 to $210 a head on top of a separate room hire. Ask early which model a venue uses, because the two are not comparable line by line.
Once the venue is settled, the next thing most couples deal with is telling everyone. A digital wedding invitation carries the address, a map, your timings and a live RSVP on one link — which matters more than usual when guests are travelling to Pittsburgh and need directions, and plenty of notice.
