Napa Valley weddings cluster into three kinds of property: a historic winery estate such as Charles Krug or Beringer Vineyards in St. Helena, a resort that can house the whole guest list like Carneros Resort and Spa or Stanly Ranch in Carneros, and a private garden estate such as Beaulieu Garden in Rutherford. A late-1980s county land-use ordinance means only a handful of working wineries may legally host a wedding, so most couples end up at a resort, an inn, or a privately held estate rather than at the winery whose wine they are pouring. Planning a wedding in Napa Valley

Napa County's Winery Definition Ordinance bars most wineries from holding events, and the few grandfathered properties book out first — if a winery wedding is non-negotiable, start there and build the date around availability. Outdoor amplified music generally has to stop between 9:30pm and 10pm across the valley, so a late reception means an enclosed barrel room, cave, or ballroom rather than a lawn. Guests will be drinking on two-lane roads with almost no rideshare coverage north of Yountville, so shuttles from one hotel base are standard practice, and Highway 29 through St. Helena crawls on summer and harvest weekends.

Can we actually get married at a working Napa winery?

Usually not. Napa County's Winery Definition Ordinance, passed in the late 1980s to protect agricultural land, classifies wineries as processing facilities and bars them from holding weddings — only a small group grandfathered in beforehand, including Charles Krug, Beringer and V. Sattui in St. Helena, may still do it. Everything else marketed as a Napa winery wedding is in fact a resort, an inn, a private estate or a property with vineyards attached rather than a bonded winery. If a working winery matters to you, treat those few venues as the fixed point and choose your date around what they have left.

How far ahead do we need to book?

Prime Saturdays between May and October generally go 12 to 18 months out at the well-known properties, and the grandfathered wineries go first because there are so few of them. Hotel room blocks need similar lead time — St. Helena, Yountville and Calistoga have limited inventory, and harvest weekends in September and October compete with wine-trade visitors for the same beds. A Friday, Sunday or off-season date will open up options that simply do not exist on a September Saturday, and usually at a lower site fee.

What does a Napa Valley wedding venue actually cost?

Site fees at the recognized estates and wineries commonly fall between $10,000 and $30,000, and that figure buys the space and a block of hours — not the food. Catering and beverage are contracted on top, frequently with a minimum in the region of $350 to $450 per guest at the higher-end properties. Private garden estates like Beaulieu Garden are often close to a raw-site rental, meaning lighting, sound, dance floor and rentals are separate line items that can add five figures again. Hotel and downtown Napa venues with in-house catering tend to come in lower and with fewer surprises.

We live outside the US — what do we need to marry legally in Napa?

California does not require residency, citizenship, a blood test or a waiting period. Both of you apply together in person at the Napa County Clerk-Recorder's office at 1127 First Street with government-issued photo ID; a public license costs roughly $83, is valid for 90 days, and needs at least one witness at the ceremony, after which your officiant returns it to the county within ten days. That produces a marriage that is legally valid in the United States. It is not automatically registered in your home country: many countries will recognize the US certificate once it has been apostilled by the California Secretary of State, but some require you to register it with your own authorities, and a few will not recognize a foreign ceremony at all unless you also complete a civil marriage at home — check with your consulate before you book anything.
