Santa Barbara County Courthouse

Finished in 1929 as part of the rebuilding after the 1925 earthquake, this is a working county courthouse that also happens to be a National Historic Landmark: Spanish Colonial Revival, red tile, arcades, and a four-faced clock tower over the whole downtown. Ceremonies run at three very different scales — the Hall of Records for eight people, the second-floor Mural Room where all four walls and the ceiling are painted with scenes from local history, and the Sunken Garden with its Palm Terrace for anything from fifteen guests to 250. Parties of fifteen or fewer can use approved lawn locations at no charge, which is why so many small weddings start here. The building still hears cases, so dates and hours follow the court calendar rather than yours.
