Planning a wedding in Doha
Venues in Doha host the reception, not the legal marriage: for Muslim couples the contract is executed before a religious or legal representative at court with witnesses present, and foreign nationals are directed to their own embassy or consulate, so nothing signed at a hotel is binding. Gender-segregated celebrations are routine rather than exceptional, and the questions worth asking early are whether a property has a separate ladies' entrance, controlled sightlines, female-only service staff, and room for a kosha — the raised bridal stage most local ballrooms are laid out around. Alcohol is served only under hotel licence, so a standalone hall or a garden reception generally means a dry one, and catering numbers are locked roughly 14 days out, with the bill based on that guarantee whether or not everyone turns up. Worth knowing if you are reading local recommendations and cannot find the venue: Qatar also runs subsidised state celebration complexes at Al Rifaa, Al Wakrah and Al Dhaayen, each holding five acoustically separated halls, which the operator Al Rayyan Events describes as a service for citizens and books only in person at the complex's administration office between 9am and 3pm.
- When to marry — November to March is the workable window for anything held outdoors, and the local calendar follows it — Qatari wedding season runs roughly January to mid-June and September to December, while July and August are avoided because daytime temperatures sit well above 40°C.
- What it costs — Sharq Village & Spa publishes an average of about QR 340 per person for a wedding dinner with soft drinks, which is a fair anchor for a five-star Doha reception. Standalone halls sit well below it — Regency Halls advertises weddings from QR 129 a head and has quoted QR 39,000 for 150 guests — but every one of these figures covers food and beverage only, and the kosha, floral installation, staging and lighting are separate contracts that routinely cost more than the catering does.
Once the venue is settled, the next thing most couples deal with is telling everyone. A digital wedding invitation carries the address, a map, your timings and a live RSVP on one link — which matters more than usual when guests are travelling to Doha and need directions, and plenty of notice.
