The last surviving waterfront estate on the Charleston peninsula, sitting on the Ashley River behind a screen of live oaks. The 1786 main house is on the National Register and comes with a deep piazza, terraces of bluestone, brick and oyster tabby, and a lawn that runs down to a dock reaching some 700 feet over the water. Dinner is almost always tented on that lawn, and the westward sunset over the river is the reason most couples pick it over a downtown address.

Federal architecture at its most exact: the East Bay Street house went up just after 1798 and is one of the tallest and best-detailed of its type in the city, with carved marble keystones outside and heart pine floors, fireplaces and chandeliers within. The building at 701 East Bay Street opened in 1882 as the Cotton Mill of Charleston, became the American Cigar Company factory in 1912, and is now a National Historic Landmark, partly for the 1945-46 workers' strike from which the civil rights anthem emerged. The Cedar Room takes roughly 8,000 square feet of it — heavy timber, brick, tall factory windows — with a courtyard downstairs used for ceremonies. Catering is fixed in-house, and the room handles a loud, late reception better than anywhere with neighbors.
