Greenvelope vs Joy: which is better for wedding invitations?
Written by the Wedvite foundersPrices checked 15 September 2026
Joy is free, website and RSVP included. Greenvelope is $99 at 100 guests, but the animated envelope is on every design and it sends over WhatsApp itself; Joy's envelope is Premium-only and WhatsApp means pasting a link. Pick Joy for a free all-in-one site, Greenvelope for the invitation; Wedvite is $89 flat for the invitation alone.

Competitor prices and features were read from the official pages on 15 September 2026: Greenvelope, Joy (withjoy.com). A cell reading "not verified on 15 September 2026" means the vendor's page did not state that figure on that date, so we leave it out rather than guess. Competitor prices are in US dollars; Wedvite's row is our own price in your currency. Prices change; confirm on the vendor's page before you buy.
Who should pick which?
Pick Joy if
you want everything in one free place: wedding website, planning dashboard, registry, unlimited guests, online RSVP and free Basic digital cards. Accept that the free card has no envelope, that Joy's own SMS delivery is a paid add-on limited to US and Canadian numbers, and that WhatsApp means pasting a link yourself.
Pick Greenvelope if
the invitation is the point. Every design opens with an animated envelope and music, delivery covers email, SMS, WhatsApp and Messenger, and the price is a flat $99 for up to 100 people ($19 for 20, $199 for 200). You will need to build the website somewhere else; Greenvelope does not offer one.
Pick Wedvite if
you want Greenvelope's kind of invitation without a guest-count ladder: $89 once for unlimited guests, with envelope, RSVP, venue map and one link for WhatsApp, text or email, in 12 languages. Like Greenvelope it has no website builder, and unlike Joy it charges for the invitation.
Is Joy free?
Yes. Joy's pricing page lists the core product at $0 a month: wedding website, planning dashboard, all-in-one registry, mobile app, unlimited guests, online RSVP and hundreds of digital invites. Joy's own words are that its wedding websites, planning tools, registry and online RSVP are free. It earns mainly through registry purchases.
The paid parts are around the edges: printed cards from $1.74 list each, Premium Digital card bundles whose price Joy does not publish (50-card minimum, 14 countries), SMS delivery add-ons, a one-time Messaging Plus purchase, and a custom domain at around $19.99 per year, which forwards to the withjoy.com address rather than masking it.
How much does Greenvelope cost?
Greenvelope prices each mailing by guest count and charges once: $19 for up to 20 people, $39 for 40, $59 for 60, $79 for 80, $99 for 100, $199 for 200 and $499 for 1,000. A paid account includes 500 texts. Annual memberships from $60 to $4,235 a year cover unlimited mailings for people who send often, each for a different purpose and capped by guest count per mailing.
The free tier is trial mode only, capped at 10 recipients, so a wedding list is always a paid mailing. There are no coins and no subscription requirement. Our Greenvelope alternatives page has the full ladder and the WhatsApp details.
Which includes a wedding website?
Joy. Its website is free, including RSVP tools, templates and hosting, and it is the centre of the product; the invitation is a card that points guests at the site. Greenvelope's own comparison page lists a wedding website as not offered; you link out to a site built elsewhere.
Wedvite sits between the two: the invitation page carries the venue map, schedule, RSVP and guest messages on the one link, hosted through your wedding date and at least 90 days after, but there is no custom domain and no registry product. For couples who want a registry too, a free Joy or Zola or The Knot website beside a paid invitation is a common pairing; see our best wedding websites with RSVP round-up. The invitation side is digital wedding invitations from $89 flat, unlimited guests, RSVP included.
Which has the better invitation?
Greenvelope, by a distance. Its animated envelope with liner, stamp and background music is on every design, including artwork you upload. Joy's free Basic Digital card has no envelope at all; envelope colour and a reveal animation exist only on Premium Digital Cards, which are paid, unpriced and carry a 50-card minimum.
Joy's free card is still a real invitation with RSVP and unlimited guests, and for a casual list that is enough. For a formal wedding where the first impression matters, Greenvelope's $99 buys the opening moment that Joy's free tier does not have. Our best digital wedding invitations round-up scores both against the rest of the field.
Which delivers by WhatsApp or text?
Greenvelope sends by email, SMS in supported countries (500 texts per paid account), WhatsApp, Messenger and a shareable link. Joy's email send is free; Joy-originated SMS is a paid Premium add-on restricted to US and Canadian numbers, and WhatsApp, Messenger or social means you paste a shareable link yourself rather than Joy sending it.
For families spread across countries, the difference shows up on the wedding week: reminders and RSVP nudges go out on the same channel with Greenvelope, and by hand with Joy. A WhatsApp wedding invitation works the same way on Wedvite: one link, one chat, RSVPs back on the dashboard.
