Wedding website welcome message: 10 examples to copy

Four things, in about sixty words. It greets, so the page does not open on a timetable. It says what the page is for, so a guest keeps scrolling instead of texting you the question. It sets the register — a black-tie evening and a lunch in a garden do not sound the same — and it names one action, the reply, with a date beside it.

That last one is the job most openings miss. Write as though you get one visit, on a phone: whatever the first screen asks of them is what gets done, and everything else needs a return trip you cannot count on.

Here is the skeleton, if a blank box is the problem:

Nothing here is etiquette. But an opening that does none of the four is decoration, and the first message in your inbox will be “sorry — what time does it start?”

Forty to eighty words. The ten above run from 17 words to 90, and the one to start from is the 50-word opening at the top of the list — three sentences and a sign-off, which is about four lines on a phone held in one hand.

Length is not a style question here, it is a layout one. Everything you add to the opening pushes the schedule, the map and the reply button further down a phone screen. At sixty words the guest reads the welcome and sees the first information block underneath it. At two hundred they scroll past a paragraph to find the times, and some of them stop scrolling.

Go shorter than twenty words when the invitation itself carried the warmth — the second example is the one-line version. Go longer only when you have something specific to say, and count it: past about a hundred and twenty words you are no longer writing a welcome.

Directly under your names and the date, and above the schedule. Not before the names: a guest who has just been sent a link wants to know whose wedding this is before they are welcomed to it. Not after the practical sections either, where it reads like an afterthought nobody scrolls back up for.

What comes immediately after it is the reason the opening can stay short. Schedule, then venue with a map, then travel and where to stay, then dress code, then the questions only your wedding raises, then the reply. Plainly labelled — Schedule, Venue, Travel — so the welcome message never has to carry a detail that belongs in a labelled block. The checklist of what to include goes through that order section by section, and the RSVP itself is where the deadline you named in the opening is actually enforced.

You rewrite it, and the link stays the same. That is the practical advantage of a page over a printed card, and it is why the eighth example can promise the schedule in October without a second announcement. Change the text once; anybody who opens the link afterwards sees the new version.
