How to limit plus-ones on your wedding RSVP
Written by the Wedvite founders
Set a party-size limit on the RSVP. On Wedvite you choose how many people one reply can include, from 1 to 50, and the form adds no one beyond it. Set it to 1 for no plus-ones or 2 for couples, ask guests to name everyone they bring, and say it kindly in the invitation wording.
Wedvite's list price is $89. This code brings it to $49, applied automatically at checkout:

A cap on every reply
Choose how many people one RSVP can include. Once a reply reaches the limit, the form adds no more people.
A place for every name
The full RSVP gives each extra person a card with a name field, so you can see who a plus-one is when guests fill it in.

By capping the party size. In the RSVP settings you set the most people one reply may include, counting the guest who replies. With the cap at 1, tapping to add a guest does nothing, so the reply is for one person. With the cap at 2, a guest can add exactly one companion. The number applies to everyone who opens the invitation link.
On the full RSVP each extra person gets a card with a name field, though companion names are optional, so a guest can still add someone without naming them. Ask for names in the RSVP note, for example: please tell us the name of everyone coming with you. A guest who would happily add a nameless extra usually thinks twice before typing a name you did not invite, and every name given appears on your dashboard.
What if households need different numbers of seats?
One cap applies to every reply, so when the Smiths are four and your colleague is one, set it to the largest household you are inviting. The form then allows four on any reply, and the rest of the work is done by your wording: say who is invited in the message you send with the link, so your colleague knows the seat is for one.
Then check the names on the dashboard as replies arrive. Each reply lists the people in its party, so a household that added more guests than you invited stands out against your own list, and you can follow up quietly before you confirm numbers with the venue. Nobody sees what other households replied, and you can lower the cap later if you change your mind.
How do I word no plus-ones on the invitation?
Say what you can host rather than what guests cannot bring, and name the guests in the message you send with the link. Most people accept a limit happily when it is explained once and kindly, and resent it only when they discover it at the door. These four lines work on the invitation or as the note beside the RSVP button; change the reason to your own, whether it is the venue, the budget or simply a small day.
Put the line near the RSVP rather than in the opening, where it would be the first thing a guest reads. Keep the cap and the wording consistent: a note that says couples only beside a form that allows four people sends mixed signals. And address the message you send with the link to the people invited by name, so the first thing they see already tells them who the seat is for.
