Formal wedding invitation wording

Both registers use the same skeleton — host line, request, both names, the date, the hour, the place, the reply — and both stay in the third person. The difference is how many of the old rules are still binding. Traditional wording is one fixed formula and every line obeys it. Formal wording keeps the tone and lets four things go.

• Figures are allowed — Saturday, October 9, 2027 at 6:30 in the evening is formal. The traditional formula spells the date, the year and the hour out in words.
• The request line may invite — invite you to celebrate their marriage is formal; request the honour of your presence and request the pleasure of your company are the only two traditional openings, and which of the two a card takes depends on the venue.
• The reply line softens — Kindly reply by September 5, where the traditional card reads The favour of a reply is requested.
• The dress code is allowed onto the card — Black tie in the lower right corner. Traditionally it lives on a separate reception card instead.

What formal wording never does is drop into the first person. “We would love you there” is warm and it is not formal, whatever font it is set in. Nicknames go the same way: Madeleine, not Maddie.

In the lower right corner, under the venue, in as few words as possible. On a formal invitation the dress code belongs on the card; the traditional formula exiles it to a separate reception card, which is one of the clearest places the two registers part.

• Black tie — Dinner jackets and long or formal dresses. Say it in two words and stop.
• Black tie optional, or black tie invited — A dark suit is welcome. This is the line to use unless you are certain of the room.
• Formal attire — Suits and cocktail dresses, no dinner jackets expected. Softer than black tie, still unambiguous.
• Cocktail attire — Not formal wear at all, and worth writing when the venue looks grander than the dress code you actually want.

Never explain it, never apologise for it, and never make it funny — “no jeans” and “dress to impress” both read as a rule aimed at somebody in particular. And remember how much of the work the rest of the card already does: a hotel ballroom at half past six tells a guest more about what to wear than any line you can print.

On a digital invitation the dress code has somewhere better to live. Put it in the details section under the schedule, where a guest can find it again the week of the wedding rather than hunting for a card they were sent in March.

It does. Formality is carried by the words, the spacing and the typeface, none of which need paper — what a card gives you is weight in the hand, and what a link gives you is a guest who cannot lose it. Every example above works unchanged, with two lines that move.

The reply line.“Kindly reply by 5 September” keeps its wording and gains a button, so an answer arrives with the guest’s name already attached instead of in handwriting you have to decipher at midnight.

The dress code. Black tie stays on the invitation, and it also goes in the details section under the schedule — the place a guest looks the week of the wedding, when the card is in a drawer.
