Casual and informal wedding invitation wording

One grammatical change, and everything else follows from it. A formal invitation is written in the third person: somebody else does the inviting and the couple are spoken about. Casual wording puts you in the sentence — we’re getting married, we’d love you there — and once you are in it, the rest of the formula has nothing to hold on to.

Four things go with it. Courtesy titles and middle names go, so it is Maya and Daniel rather than Miss Maya Rennick. The request formula goes: request the pleasure of your company becomes a sentence you would actually say. The spelled-out date and hour go into figures — Saturday 9 October 2027, 3:00pm. And contractions are allowed, which is most of what makes a line sound like a person wrote it.

What does not go is the order. A casual invitation still reads host, invitation, names, date, time, place, reply, in that sequence, and it still carries every fact the traditional wording carries. That page is the register at the other end of the scale, and the useful thing about comparing them is how little the information differs: same six lines, different vocabulary.

Casual is a register, not a discount on information. These seven things survive every relaxation of tone, and a guest cannot answer without them:

• Who is inviting — if it is the two of you, your names at the top do it; if a parent is hosting, name them, because guests answer to whoever asked.
• Both names — in the order you say them out loud, spelled the way they are spelled on the place cards.
• The full date, with the year — including the day of the week. The year is the line couples drop and the line that books a flight.
• A start time in figures — 3:00pm, not 3ish and not the afternoon. If there is an arrival window before the ceremony, give both.
• When it ends — an end time, or at least the shape of the evening. Whoever is driving home, or paying a sitter, is reading for this.
• The place and the town — the venue name and the town are enough on a link, because the map carries the postcode; on paper you need the full address.
• A reply date and one way to reply — one deadline, one route. Two routes means two lists to reconcile the week before.

Notice what is not on that list: the formula. No request line, no spelled-out hour, no and afterwards at. Those are the parts casual wording is allowed to throw away, and the six examples above throw them away while keeping all seven facts.
