Culture changes four things on a wedding invitation and leaves the rest alone: who hosts, how many events the card carries, which language leads, and which roles it names. The date, the venue and the reply line read the same everywhere. Below, nine complete cards: seven traditions, Spanish wording, and one card for a marriage joining two.

What actually changes from one tradition to another?

Less than a stationer will tell you. Four things change, and they are the four that decide whether a card reads as your family’s or as a template with your names dropped in.

Who is named as the host — in Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, South Asian and much of West African practice the parents invite and the couple are named as their son and their daughter. In the Anglo-American line the couple increasingly invite and the parents appear further down, or not at all. This is the single biggest difference between two cards that otherwise say the same thing.
How many events the card has to carry — one ceremony and one reception is the exception here, not the rule. A Nigerian card carries a traditional wedding and a white wedding; a Pakistani card carries three evenings hosted by two families; a Vietnamese card carries a ceremony at a family altar and a banquet hours later. Each needs its own hour, its own address and — where the hosts differ — its own host.
Which language leads, and whether the second one is real — a card can be Vietnamese first with English beneath, English first with a Hebrew parallel text, or Spanish throughout. What it should never be is a script used as ornament: a line nobody in either family reads is decoration, and it is the fastest way to a card with a mistake on it that nobody catches.
And the roles a card has to name — the Filipino principal sponsors, the Greek koumbaros, the Nigerian families’ own titles. These are people with a part to play in the service, which is why they are printed on the card while a Western best man is not.

What does not change is most of the card. The date, the start time, the venue’s full address, one reply-by date and one way to reply are logistics, and they read the same in every tradition on this page. Which traditions have a page of their own?

Four traditions carry enough of their own detail that a section here would short-change them, and three more pages cover the Islamic designs, an Arabic-first card and the mechanics of a bilingual invitation. If yours is one of these seven, leave — that page will have the wording, the events and the etiquette in full.

Indian — the longest card in this family. An invocation at the top, the parents named as hosts, and four to six events across three days — each needing its own time, its own venue and often its own dress note.
Catholic — the one tradition whose wording is partly set for you. A Nuptial Mass is a sacrament rather than a ceremony, the parish church is named in full, and the phrase that opens the card follows the rite instead of the couple’s taste.
Chinese — the double-happiness card, where the parents traditionally name the couple as their son and their daughter, the lunar date sits beside the solar one, and the banquet — not the ceremony — is what guests are being invited to.
Muslim — the nikah and the walima are two different invitations, and getting that distinction right matters more than anything on the card’s design. That page carries both, and the religious opening lines.
Islamic designs — the designs themselves rather than the words: what a card looks like when it has to hold Arabic typography, a nikah and a walima, and a guest list that spans two countries.
Arabic — when Arabic is the card’s first language and not its translation — right-to-left from the heading down, with the names, the venue and the reply labels all reading in that direction.

Nine wedding invitation wordings, tradition by tradition

Each one is a whole card, not a fragment: copy it, change the names, the dates and the addresses, and it is ready. The placeholder names are invented. Where a line is printed in its own script it is because that line is standard and we could verify it — and where it is romanised instead, the note says so. One rule that holds for all nine: any line in a language nobody in either family reads should be checked by someone who does, before it goes anywhere near a printer.

Vietnamese families usually issue two cards, not one, and the word in the middle of the card tells a guest which family invited them.

The centre word is the part you cannot guess: Vu Quy on the bride’s family’s card, Tân Hôn on the groom’s, Thành Hôn on a single card issued jointly by both. Print the wrong one and every relative notices. Lễ Gia Tiên is the ceremony at the family altar and the banquet is a separate event with its own hour, so both get their own block. If the family uses the lunar date, it goes beside the Gregorian one, never instead of it.

The Filipino card is long for a reason: it names the people who will stand for the couple, and leaving them off is the omission guests notice first.

Principal sponsors are the ninong and ninang, and they are listed as couples in the order the families agreed — a running argument in some families, and worth settling before the card is set rather than after. The consent line is the conventional opening even when the couple are hosting themselves. Three principal couples is a short list; ten is common, and at that length the sponsors move to their own panel or their own page. The wording for the Nuptial Mass itself belongs with the Catholic rite rather than with this card, which handles the structure around it.

Nigeria is not one tradition, and a card often joins two: a Yoruba engagement and an Igbo igba nkwu are different ceremonies with different hosts, which is why “the traditional wedding” does the work here rather than a name that only fits one side. Chieftaincy and professional titles are part of a name — Chief, Otunba, Engr, Dr — and are never trimmed to make a line fit. Aso ebi and the colour of the day are a request that costs your guests money, so put them on the card only where guests already expect to be asked.

The koumbaros or koumbara exchanges the stefana over the couple during the service, so the card names them the way a Western card names nobody. The church is given in its Orthodox form and then in English, because guests are looking for a building and a sign. One thing not to write: the Orthodox service has no spoken vows — the crowning is the moment — so a card promising an “exchange of vows” is describing a different wedding. The parents lead the card; the couple’s own voice, if it appears, appears in the reception line.

The chuppah time is the real start of the wedding, and the kabbalat panim before it is a reception, not a queue — printing both is how guests arrive when they meant to. The Hebrew date belongs beside the civil date, not in place of it. Both sets of parents are named on their own lines, as hosts. This version romanises the Hebrew on purpose: a parallel Hebrew text is a normal half of a card like this, and it is set by someone who reads Hebrew, not translated by whoever is designing the invitation.

6. Korean · the parents’ card

A Korean invitation names the couple as each family’s son and daughter, and its opening sentence is a shared convention almost nobody rewrites.

장남 and 차녀 — eldest son, second daughter — are standard and tell guests the birth order, which is information a Western card never carries. The opening sentence is a shared formula rather than the couple’s own words, and rewriting it in a personal voice is the change most likely to read as a mistake. The floor and the hall name matter: a Korean wedding hall runs consecutive weddings in slots, and a guest at the wrong hall on the right day misses it entirely.

Naming the host beside each event is the single most useful line on a South Asian card: a guest invited by one family should not have to work out whether the valima is theirs. The separate dinner hour is not a flourish — guests arrive at the stated time and eat two hours later, and printing only one time is how people arrive hungry at eight or miss the ceremony at ten. “Admits two” is how a fixed venue count survives contact with an extended family. The nikah and the walima as religious events have their own wording, and it is on the Muslim page rather than here.

Four things this card does that an English translation would not. Invitarle addresses the guest as usted; swap in invitarte and the whole card has to come down a register to match. Both surnames stay — paternal then maternal — and Sra. María Elena Soto de Rivera is the traditional married form, still ordinary across much of Latin America and dated in much of Spain, so it follows the family and not a rule. Weekdays and months are lowercase and there is no comma before the year. And the reply line is Confirmar asistencia: R.S.V.P. on a Spanish card reads as an import, which is the giveaway that the Spanish came last.

Give each ceremony its own block with its own hour and address, and name it in the tradition it belongs to rather than flattening both into “the ceremony”. The line that does the most work is the one giving guests permission to attend one: a grandparent who cannot manage two venues in a day should not have to ask. What to resist is a single blended invocation written to cover both faiths — it usually satisfies neither family, and two named ceremonies do the job that one invented sentence cannot.

What transfers between traditions, and what does not?

Read nine cards side by side and the borrowable parts separate themselves from the parts that only work where they come from. These five travel anywhere, and most English-language cards would be better for them:

Naming the parents as hosts — it costs two lines, it settles the question of who is inviting whom, and it is the most portable change on this page.
Naming the host beside each event — the South Asian habit of writing which family hosts which evening. Any wedding with two receptions or a second-day brunch is clearer for it.
A separate dinner time — printed as a matter of course on Pakistani cards. Any wedding with a long gap between the ceremony and the meal should say so rather than let guests guess.
An admission line — “admits two”, from cards written for extended families and fixed venue counts. It does in three words what an awkward conversation does badly.
A second calendar beside the civil date — Hebrew, lunar or Hijri. It costs one line and it is the line the family keeps.

And four that do not travel, however well they read on someone else’s card. A role title without the role: printing a koumbaros or a ninong when nobody is performing that part of a service is costume, and the people who recognise the word are exactly the people who will notice. A religious opening from a faith not being practised — an invocation, a blessing, a saint’s name — which belongs to the ceremony actually taking place, and which the page for that tradition will show being used rather than borrowed. A script as decoration, which is how a card ends up with an error only the guests can read. And an obligation your guests have not agreed to: aso ebi and the colour of the day work because those guests expect to be asked to buy fabric, and land very differently on a list that does not.

The honest version of this section is short. Borrow structure freely — hosts, events, times, admission, calendars. Borrow meaning only when you are actually doing the thing the words describe.

What does it cost to send a card like this as a link?

$89 at list, once, for any number of guests, hosted through your wedding date and at least 90 days after. That is the whole invitation: several events with their own times and venues, a map pin for each, the reply collected on the page and a headcount that updates as guests answer. There is no per-guest fee, which matters on the lists these traditions produce — a card that has to reach four hundred people costs the same as one reaching forty.

The first language is included. A second — Vietnamese under English, Spanish beside it, an Arabic or Korean edition of the same invitation — is $10 at list on top, and the editor shows it in your own currency before you commit. Three things a link does that a printed card cannot, and they are the three that matter most to a multi-event wedding. A time that moves can be corrected after every guest has opened it. An event added late — a tea ceremony the grandparents ask for in March — does not mean a reprint. And a guest who needs to know which evening is theirs can be sent to the page rather than sent a second card. What you give up is real too: no card in the keepsake box, and any relative who does not use a phone needs a printed copy and a number to reply to. Most families who send a link print a handful anyway, for exactly those people.

Wording by culture: the questions we are asked

How do you word a wedding invitation when the two families are from different cultures?

Give each ceremony its own block — its own name, hour and address — and name it in the tradition it belongs to rather than merging both into “the ceremony”. Both sets of parents go on the card, on their own lines, in whichever order the families agree. Then add the line most couples forget: that a guest may come to one and still be welcome. What to avoid is a single blended blessing written to cover two faiths at once; it tends to satisfy neither family, where two clearly named ceremonies satisfy both.

Whose names come first on a Vietnamese or Korean wedding invitation?

The parents’. On both cards the parents are the ones inviting, and the couple appear as their son and their daughter — a Korean card says so grammatically, naming the eldest son or second daughter of each pair, and a Vietnamese card opens with Ông Bà and the parents’ names. Vietnamese families usually go further and issue two cards, one from each side, with a different word in the middle: Vu Quy from the bride’s family, Tân Hôn from the groom’s, Thành Hôn on a joint card. If the couple are hosting themselves, their names can lead, but the parents still belong on the card.

Does a Jewish wedding invitation need a Hebrew line?

It is conventional rather than required, and the two elements worth keeping are the Hebrew date beside the civil date and the parallel Hebrew text if your families read it. Two practical lines matter more: the chuppah time, which is when the wedding actually starts, and the kabbalat panim before it, which is a reception guests are welcome at rather than a waiting period. Have any Hebrew set by someone who reads it — a transliteration you cannot check is worse on a printed card than an English line you can.

Why does a Nigerian wedding invitation name two weddings?

Because there usually are two: a traditional ceremony hosted by the families, often in the bride’s home town, and a church or white wedding, often in a different city, commonly on consecutive days. Guests need both, with separate times and venues, to work out which they are travelling for. Two more things sit on the card and nowhere else: the aso ebi fabric for the traditional day and the colour of the day for the white wedding. Both ask guests to spend money, so they belong on a card whose guests already expect the request.

Is a Spanish wedding invitation just the English one translated?

No, and the tell is the reply line: a Spanish card says Confirmar asistencia, so an R.S.V.P. printed on one shows the Spanish was added last. The first line carries the bigger decision — invitarle addresses the guest as usted, invitarte as tú, and the rest of the card has to match whichever you pick. What transfers between traditions, and what does not?

Naming the parents as hosts — it costs two lines, it settles the question of who is inviting whom, and it is the most portable change on this page.
Naming the host beside each event — the South Asian habit of writing which family hosts which evening. Any wedding with two receptions or a second-day brunch is clearer for it.
A separate dinner time — printed as a matter of course on Pakistani cards. Any wedding with a long gap between the ceremony and the meal should say so rather than let guests guess.
An admission line — “admits two”, from cards written for extended families and fixed venue counts. It does in three words what an awkward conversation does badly.
A second calendar beside the civil date — Hebrew, lunar or Hijri. It costs one line and it is the line the family keeps.
