Reception-only invitations, and when they are the right call

When something other than the guest list decides the size of the ceremony. That is the whole test, and it is worth applying honestly, because guests apply it too. Four situations pass it easily.

• A register office or courthouse ceremony — the room is sized by the building, often at a couple of dozen seats and sometimes at a dozen. Nobody chose that number, which is exactly why it is easy to write down.
• A destination wedding — a handful of people can take a week off and fly; a hundred and fifty cannot. The ceremony is limited by air fares, and the party at home is the wedding most of your guests will actually attend.
• An elopement — the two of you and two witnesses, by design. Nobody was left out, because nobody was in — and a reception afterwards is how the people who love you get their day.
• A small ceremony you actively want — vows in front of twenty and a party for two hundred is a real preference, not a compromise, and it is the most common reason of the four. Say it as a preference and it reads as one.

And the case that fails the test: a ceremony with room to spare, split anyway to shorten the front rows. The failure is arithmetic and guests can do it. One more distinction worth having before you write anything. A reception-only invitation goes to a household that is not at the ceremony. A British evening invitation goes to a household that is not at the ceremony or the meal but joins a reception already in progress. An after-party invitation goes to guests who were at the whole wedding and are being kept up later. A wedding after-party is the party that starts when the reception has to stop — usually because the venue has a licence, a curfew or a neighbour. It is the mirror image of a reception-only invitation: the guest list is people who were at the wedding, and the thing being added is hours rather than guests.

Three things separate it from the reception, and all three change what the invitation has to say. The hour: it begins at midnight or whenever the reception ends, so nobody needs a date, only a time and an end. The venue: a hotel bar, a back room, somebody’s garden — which means directions, a taxi or a walk, and a way home. And the register: after-parties are dressed down, unseated and unspeeched, and saying so is half the invitation.

Who gets one is a list decision like any other. If it is everyone at the reception, it belongs as a block at the foot of the main invitation — example five. Give it an invitation of its own when the list is shorter than the wedding list, when the venue has its own door policy, or when local friends who were not at the wedding are coming for the night, which is common and perfectly fine. What you should not do is leave it unmentioned until the night itself: guests who booked a taxi for midnight in March cannot unbook it in May.

The awkward part of this whole decision is a printing problem, and a link does not have it. Two guest lists need two invitations that look like one wedding: same typography, same envelope, same music, different words and a different schedule.
