Catholic and Christian wedding invitation wording

The Catholic Church celebrates a marriage in one of two forms, and which one you are in decides three lines of your invitation. A Nuptial Mass puts the vows inside the liturgy, with the readings, the Eucharist and the nuptial blessing around them. A wedding without Mass is the same rite of marriage celebrated on its own, and it is the ordinary form when one of you is not Catholic.

When there is a Mass, say so. At the Nuptial Mass at which their daughter replaces at the marriage of their daughter, and the Sacrament is usually named inside it — will receive the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. That is not decoration. Why the length of a service is worth naming at all is a rule the ceremony wording page owns; what is Catholic about it is the knock-on. Parishes fit a wedding Mass around the Saturday vigil, so the hour on these cards is late morning or early afternoon far more often than evening, and the afternoon that opens up between the church and the reception is something your guests have to plan around.

When there is no Mass, name nothing. The wording becomes the plain formula — at the celebration of the marriage of their daughter — the Sacrament line goes, and the hour is free to be four in the afternoon. Writing Nuptial Mass over a ceremony that is not one is the one mistake on this page that your most observant guests will catch, because they are the ones who will arrive expecting Communion.

One rule you do not have to think about: a Catholic ceremony is in a house of worship, so the request line is always the honour of your presence, never the pleasure of your company. That rule belongs to traditional wording, along with the spelled-out date and the list of what is never abbreviated — hold to all of it, because a church invitation is the most conservative card in the suite. And whether guests who are not Catholic may receive Communion is a real question with a real answer, but the answer goes in the order of service or the schedule section, never on the invitation.

The parish is named the way the parish names itself, and Catholic parishes name themselves at length: The Church of Saint Bridget, The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, The Church of the Immaculate Conception. The article stays and the saint keeps the full name. What does not go on a formal card is the shorthand the congregation actually says — St Bridget’s, or the Immaculate — however universally it is used inside the parish. That any wedding building is named in full rather than as an address, and what a map does with the postcode once the invitation is a link, is the general rule and belongs to the ceremony wording page. The city and state still go underneath.

The diocese is not named. It appears on your paperwork, on the letters between your parish and your bishop, and on nothing a guest ever sees. The same goes for the parish’s own address lines, its registered charity number and anything else printed on the parish bulletin.

The celebrant is the interesting case, because the general rule and the Catholic practice pull in opposite directions. The rule — set out on the ceremony wording page — keeps clergy off the card altogether and puts them in the order of service instead. Catholic families hold one narrow exception to that, and it is about kinship rather than about the liturgy: when the priest is a relation, or the pastor who has known the family for thirty years, he is part of what is being announced, and leaving him off would be the odd choice.

When you use the exception, the line has a fixed shape. It sits under the parish, on its own, and it carries the relationship that earns it: The Reverend Thomas Donnelly, uncle of the bride, celebrant. It never joins the host line — a priest celebrating the Mass is not giving the wedding, and moving him to the top rewrites who is hosting. A concelebrant, a deacon assisting, a retired pastor flown in for the day: all of them are the order of service, all of them, and a card that lists three clergy has stopped being an invitation.

By three lines, and then not at all. This is worth saying plainly, because couples arrive at this question expecting a different formula and there is not one.

First, there is no Mass to name, so the request line points straight at the marriage: at the marriage of their daughter. Nothing is lost by that — an Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian or Lutheran service is a service, and the card says which church it is in.

Second, the sacramental phrasing softens. Where a Catholic card writes will receive the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, a Protestant one writes who will be joined in holy matrimony, united in Christian marriage, or simply married in the sight of God. Same register, one theological word lighter.

Third, a verse does the work an invocation does. Non-denominational and evangelical invitations commonly open with scripture rather than with a formula — attributed, two lines at most, in the exact position a Catholic invocation would take.

What actually varies most is not the denomination but the congregation. A cathedral service and a community church in the same city take different cards: the first wants the traditional formula intact, the second wants come and worship with us and a reception in the fellowship hall. Both are correct, and both still take the honour of your presence, because both are houses of worship. Three things, and all three of them are specific to a church rather than to weddings in general.

The parish owns the hour, and parishes move it. A Saturday slot shifts by half an hour to clear the vigil Mass, a funeral takes the morning, a visiting bishop reshuffles the day. A printed card cannot be corrected once it is in a hundred houses; a page can, and the correction reaches the guest who read the invitation in February as surely as the one opening it tonight.

A morning Mass leaves a gap. Eleven o’clock in the church and seven in the evening at the reception is four hours a guest has to plan, and they will ask you about it one at a time.
