Planning a wedding in The Yorkshire Dales
A National Park address does not mean you can marry on a hillside. Since April 2022 approved premises in England may hold civil ceremonies outdoors, but only inside the boundary of their own land and only after the venue has cleared the exact spot with the superintendent registrar in advance — the fell, riverbank or footpath beyond the wall is legally out of reach. Book the registrar through North Yorkshire Council yourself, separately from the venue: attendance at an approved premises runs £545 to £645 depending on the day and season, with a further £46.50 per person for the notice, and none of it shows up on the venue's quote. Guest transport is the third line people underestimate, because the dales are threaded with single-track roads and thin parking; Telfit asks non-resident guests to come by minibus, and Tan Hill Inn sits at 1,732 feet where snow can shut the road.
- When to marry — Late May to September is the stretch worth competing for, because it is when the terraces, walled gardens and marquee lawns are actually usable and the evenings run long enough to photograph after dinner.
- What it costs — Published figures at the venues here run from £2,500 for a ceremony-only hire at Bolton Castle to £9,950 for exclusive use of that castle and its gardens, with Falcon Manor packages opening at £4,495 and Yorebridge House listing £6,995 for the house and £19,995 for a tipi wedding — none of which covers the registrar, and most of which excludes drinks and beds.
Once the venue is settled, the next thing most couples deal with is telling everyone. A digital wedding invitation carries the address, a map, your timings and a live RSVP on one link — which matters more than usual when guests are travelling to The Yorkshire Dales and need directions, and plenty of notice.
